Grace in Galatians (Part 90): Why God Swore To God

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.
As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.
Key scriptures for this year:
(2 Corinthians 9:8 TPT)
"Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do."
(Galatians 5:4 TPT)
"If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!"
(Romans 6:14 ERV)
"Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God's grace."
(1 Corinthians 15:10 CEV)
"But God treated me with undeserved grace! He made me what I am, and his grace wasn't wasted. I worked much harder than any of the other apostles, although it was really God's grace at work and not me."
Scripture we will study today:
(Hebrews 6:17-18 TPT)
“So God added his vow to his promise. Since he could find no one greater than himself, he swore an oath on his own integrity to keep the promise to Abraham’s descendants. So when God wanted to end all doubt and confirm it even more forcibly to those who would inherit his promises, he added his vow to the promise. So it is impossible for God to lie for we know that his promise and his vow will never change!”
(Genesis 22:16-17 NIV)
“I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies.”
(Titus 1:2 NIV)
“in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.”
Malachi 3:6 NKJV
“For I am the LORD, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.”
(Jeremiah 1:12 NIV)
“The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
Setting the Stage:
Yesterday, we established that God’s promises are legally binding and cannot be changed. I told you that God swore by Himself when He promised Abraham, and I said it multiple times because I wanted it to sink deep into your spirit! Today, I want you to see WHY God did this, and it will bless you richly!
Think about this for a moment. When some people make promises, they might say, “I swear on my mother’s grave,” or the kids say today, “On my Mama!” or some say, “I swear to God.” The point is this: we are invoking something or someone greater than ourselves to add weight to our words. But when God wanted to make His promise even MORE certain, He had a problem: THERE’S NOBODY GREATER THAN GOD! So what did He do? HE SWORE BY HIMSELF! God said, “I swear by God!“
This means God’s promise is backed by God’s own existence! If the promise fails, God fails. If the oath is broken, God’s integrity is shattered. But here’s the stunning truth: IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE! The Word of God is immutable, inexhaustible, inerrant, and infallible! God’s very nature makes deception impossible. He literally CANNOT go back on His word!
You’re not hoping God will keep His word. You’re resting in the absolute certainty that God MUST keep His word because His own integrity is on the line! God is more committed to you than you are committed to yourself!
So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.
1. God’s Promise Wasn’t Enough, So He Added an Oath!
The writer of Hebrews says, “God added his vow to his promise.” Why would God do this? Wasn’t His promise sufficient? Yes! But God wanted to END ALL DOUBT! He wanted to give you DOUBLE ASSURANCE! He gave you two unchangeable things: His promise AND His oath!
How this applies to you:
— God went above and beyond to secure your confidence! Most people would accept God’s promise and be satisfied. But God was basically saying, “I want to remove EVERY SHADOW OF DOUBT from your mind!” So He added an oath to the promise. Why? Because God WANTS you to be absolutely certain!
— Your faith has TWO anchors, not one! If you doubted the promise, you have the oath. If you questioned the oath, you have the promise. Together, they create UNSHAKABLE ASSURANCE! You’re not holding on to God by one rope; you’re secured with DOUBLE CORDS that cannot be broken!
— God knows how prone we are to doubt! He understands our weaknesses, our struggles, our questions. That’s why He didn’t leave us with just a promise. He reinforced it with an oath! This isn’t about God’s character being questionable; it’s about God’s compassion being abundant! He knows what you need to stand firm in faith!
— The oath was for YOU, not for God! God didn’t need to convince Himself. He already knows He’s faithful. The oath was to CONVINCE YOU! To remove your hesitation. To silence your doubts. To give you ROCK-SOLID CONFIDENCE that what He promised, He will perform!
— This reveals that God is NOT playing games with your future! Some people worry, “What if God changes His mind? What if I mess up and He cancels the promise?” But God settled that question by SWEARING AN OATH! He made His promise legally binding and then doubled down with a vow! Your destiny isn’t up for negotiation!
— Double assurance means double peace! When your mind starts racing with worry, remember: you don’t just have a promise; you have a promise PLUS an oath! When the enemy whispers doubt, remind him: God didn’t just speak it; HE SWORE IT! When circumstances contradict the promise, stand on BOTH the promise AND the oath!
— This level of commitment demands your faith response! Will you BELIEVE what He’s gone to such lengths to guarantee? Your faith honors His oath. Your confidence validates His vow. When you believe without wavering, you’re saying, “God, Your oath is ENOUGH for me! I take You at Your Word!” This is the mindset required for us to walk and live by faith.
2. God Swore By Himself Because There’s No One Greater!
The text says, “Since he could find no one greater than himself, he swore an oath on his own integrity.” God looked throughout the universe for someone or something to swear by, and there was NOTHING HIGHER THAN HIMSELF! In Genesis 22:16, God declared to Abraham, “I swear by myself!“
How this applies to you:
— God’s oath is backed by God’s own existence! When you swear by something, you’re saying, “May I be cursed if I break this oath!” But God can’t be cursed. God can’t fail. God can’t cease to exist. So when God swears by Himself, He’s saying, “I am as committed to this promise as I am to My own existence!”
— This means the promise is AS PERMANENT as God is ETERNAL! God doesn’t have a beginning or an end. He’s the same yesterday, today, and forever. Your promise from God has the same permanence as God’s own existence! As long as God IS, your promise STANDS!
— Your promise is tied to God’s identity! God said, “I swear by myself.” That means God’s reputation, God’s name, God’s character, God’s integrity are ALL connected to keeping His promise to you! If the promise fails, GOD’S IDENTITY is called into question! But since God cannot fail, the promise cannot fail!
— Nothing in heaven or earth can cancel what God has sworn! Satan can’t override it. Demons can’t nullify it. Circumstances can’t dissolve it. Your mistakes can’t cancel it. And people can’t add to it.
— This is why Abraham believed against hope! Romans 4 says Abraham hoped against hope. Why? Because he understood that the same God who promised is the same God who has the POWER to perform! And since God swore by Himself, Abraham knew God had STAKED HIS OWN INTEGRITY on bringing it to pass! It did not matter that he was almost 100 years old. It did not matter that his wife was almost 90, and she had been barren all her life. Since God said it, God HAD to perform it. Since God declared it, God HAD to make it good (Numbers 23:19).
— God is more committed to you than you are committed to yourself! You’re banking on someone who literally CANNOT fail you!
— Every promise in Scripture carries the weight of God’s oath! When God says you’re healed by Jesus’ stripes, He’s sworn it. When He says He’ll supply all your needs when you sow, He’s sworn it. When He declares you’re more than a conqueror, He’s sworn it. EVERY promise is backed by God’s oath! Every word is secured by His vow! Your job is to believe God’s promises and exercise faith in them.
3. God Wanted to END ALL DOUBT Forever!
The passage says God did this “when God wanted to end all doubt and confirm it even more forcibly.” God’s goal wasn’t just to make a promise. His goal was to ELIMINATE EVERY REASON FOR DOUBT! He wanted you to have BULLETPROOF FAITH!
How this applies to you:
— God is not interested in you living with uncertainty! He doesn’t want you wondering, “Will God really come through?” He doesn’t want you questioning, “Is this promise actually for me?” God wants you to know, beyond any shadow of doubt, that His word to you is ABSOLUTE!
— Doubt is not a friend of your faith! James says the one who doubts is like a wave tossed by the sea, unstable in all his ways. God knows that doubt paralyzes your progress. That’s why He went to such lengths to remove every basis for doubt! When you understand God’s oath, doubt loses its power!
— The phrase “even more forcibly” means God SHOUTED His promise! He didn’t whisper it. He didn’t suggest it. He didn’t hint at it. God DECLARED it, PROMISED it, and then SWORE AN OATH on it!
— Just like I told you yesterday about that Platoon Sergeant who couldn’t change AR 670-1, the Judaizers couldn’t change God’s promise! The regulation was above her authority. The promise is above EVERYONE’S authority except God Himself! And since God swore by Himself, NOBODY can modify the terms! They can get mad all they want, but they can’t change the regulation!
— You’re not being presumptuous when you expect God to keep His word! Some people think, “Well, I don’t want to be too bold with God.” But God says, “BE BOLD! I’ve given you DOUBLE ASSURANCE! I’ve sworn by Myself!” Expecting God to fulfill His oath isn’t arrogance; it’s OBEDIENCE to what He’s commanded you to believe!
— Doubt is an insult to God’s oath! When you doubt what God has promised and sworn to do, you’re essentially saying, “I don’t think God’s oath is strong enough.” You are saying, “I don’t believe God will do what He said… at least not for me.” Let’s say I tell my son to cut the grass, and I will pay him $50. While he is cutting the lawn, our neighbor, his friend, comes by and asks, “Hey man, are you going to get paid to do that?” If my son says, “My Dad said he would pay me $50. But you just never know what my Dad will do!” If I heard that, my heart would be crushed. Why? Because he is saying that he has NO CONFIDENCE in my word. This is exactly how God feels when you say, “Well, you just never know what God will do!” Your doubt isn’t humility; it’s actually DISHONORING God’s commitment to His Word!
— When you have fearless confidence in God’s Word, you are not being arrogant. You are living by faith! You are expressing confidence in God, and you believe He will do what He said He would do in your life! God does not think that is being presumptuous. God loves it, becuase that is FAITH!
4. It Is IMPOSSIBLE for God to Lie!
Hebrews 6:17-18 TPT concludes with this absolutely powerful statement: “So it is impossible for God to lie for we know that his promise and his vow will never change!” This is the foundation of everything! Not “difficult.” Not “unlikely.” IMPOSSIBLE! The Word of God is immutable, inexhaustible, inerrant, and infallible!
How this applies to you:
— Lying contradicts God’s very nature! Titus 1:2 calls Him “God, who does not lie.” Numbers 23:19 asks, “Has he said, and will he not do it?” God’s character makes deception impossible. He can’t lie any more than He can cease to exist.
— This means every promise in Scripture is ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED! When God says it, it’s already done! When He promises it, you can count on it! There’s not one promise in the Bible that has an asterisk or fine print! Every word is backed by God’s unchangeable nature!
— Your circumstances may lie, but God cannot! Your situation may look hopeless, but God says NOTHING is impossible! And whose report will you believe? Trust God’s oath over your circumstances!
— The impossibility of God lying gives you CERTAINTY in chaos! When everything around you is shaking, uncertain, and unstable, you have ONE UNSHAKABLE ANCHOR TO REST IN: GOD’S VOW! The systems of this world may fail, but God’s Word stands forever! When you build your life on what God has sworn, you’re building on the ONLY THING that cannot be moved!
— God’s promise and vow will NEVER change! Malachi 3:6 says, “I am the LORD, I do not change.” This isn’t just about God’s character in general; it’s specifically about HIS COMMITMENT TO HIS PROMISES! What He promised Abraham 4,000 years ago hasn’t weakened, expired, or been modified. It’s as powerful today as the day He spoke it!
— God watches over His Word to perform it! Jeremiah 1:12 says, “or I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.” Every day, God is watching over His Word to ensure it is fulfilled on the earth! He’s not passive about His promises. He’s ACTIVELY WORKING to bring them to pass! Your job is to believe; His job is to perform!
— This truth allows you to ENTER INTO GOD’S REST! When you know God’s oath is unbreakable, you can REST and stop stressing! You’re not working to MAKE the promise happen; you’re resting while God PERFORMS His oath! Rest isn’t laziness; it’s FAITH in God’s sworn commitment to you!
— Your faith can rest in God’s inability to lie! You can REST in the reality that God CANNOT go back on His word! 2 Tim 2:13 teaches us that even when we are faithless, God remains faithful! Why? Because He cannot deny Himself! He cannot go against His OWN VOW! His own commitment to us. Wow!
That's enough for today.
Declaration of Faith:
Father, I thank You that You didn’t just promise; You SWORE AN OATH!
You added Your vow to Your promise to END ALL DOUBT in my heart!
Since You could find no one greater, You swore by Yourself!
Your oath is backed by Your own existence and secured by Your integrity!
It is IMPOSSIBLE for You to lie, so every promise You’ve made is ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN!
Even when I am faithless, You remain faithful, because You cannot deny Yourself!
You are more committed to me than I’m committed to myself!
Every day You watch over Your Word to perform it in my life!
So, I stand on Your Word, which is backed by Your Oath!
I pray bold prayers because You’ve made bold commitments!
My future is as secure as Your own existence!
Your promise and Your vow will NEVER change!
I am Living the Grace Life and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
This is Today’s Word. Apply it and prosper!
