Grace in Galatians (Part 89): Why God's Promises Can't Be Changed

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.

“Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.”

“Beloved ones, let me use an example from everyday life. If a contract is signed and agreed to by two people, no one else can come afterward and cancel it or add conditions to the agreement.”

“So God added his vow to his promise. Since he could find no one greater than himself, he swore an oath on his own integrity to keep the promise to Abraham’s descendants. So when God wanted to end all doubt and confirm it even more forcibly to those who would inherit his promises, he added his vow to the promise. So it is impossible for God to lie for we know that his promise and his vow will never change!”

“God is not a man. He will not lie. God is not a human being. He does not change his mind. If he says he will do something, then he will do it. If he makes a promise, he will make it happen.”

Setting the Stage:

Yesterday, we established that everything you need has already been deposited into your spiritual account by grace, and faith is your access card. Today, Paul shifts to something that should strengthen your confidence: The promises of God are BINDING, UNCHANGEABLE, and ETERNAL! Nobody can cancel them, modify them, or add conditions to them!

Think about this for a moment. When God made His promise to Abraham, He didn’t include an asterisk with fine print. He didn’t add loopholes or escape clauses. God’s promise was absolute, unconditional, and irrevocable! And here’s the game-changer for you: that same promise made to Abraham has been transferred to you through Christ! What God promised Abraham is now YOUR inheritance!

But here’s where religion messes believers up. Religion tries to add conditions to what God made unconditional. Religion says, “Yes, God promised, BUT…” and then adds requirements, rules, and regulations. But Paul is about to shut that down completely! Using a simple legal principle that everyone understands, Paul is about to prove that the promise stands, regardless of what religion tries to add to it!

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. God’s Promises Are Legally Binding and Cannot Be Changed!

Paul uses a legal illustration everyone can understand. When two parties sign a contract, no third party can come in later and change the terms. The agreement is sealed, signed, and settled! If this principle applies to human contracts, how much more does it apply to God’s covenant promises?

How this applies to you:

— God’s promise to Abraham was a done deal! It wasn’t a rough draft. It wasn’t a proposal. It was a covenant, sealed by God Himself. No human, no religious system, not even the Law that came 430 years later could change it!

— You can’t improve on what God has already perfected! The promise was perfect from the start. When the Law came, some thought it was an improvement or an upgrade. But you can’t upgrade what’s already complete! The promise of grace doesn’t need the Law’s additions to make it better.

— The devil can’t cancel what God has confirmed! Satan tried to stop the promise through Pharaoh, through Haman, through Herod, and through every attack on God’s people. But the promise kept advancing because God’s word is immutable. God watches over His Word to perform it (Jer 1:12).

— Your performance can’t disqualify what God’s grace has qualified! If the promise depended on your behavior, it would have been canceled long ago. But because it’s based on God’s character, not yours, the promise remains intact regardless of your track record!

— Religious traditions can’t add requirements to what grace made unconditional! Throughout church history, religion has tried to add works, rituals, observances, and rules to God’s free promise. But Paul says you can’t do that! The contract was signed with Abraham by grace through faith, and nobody gets to add fine print!

— Time doesn’t expire God’s promises! Human contracts may have expiration dates, but God’s promises are eternal. What He promised Abraham 4,000 years ago is still in effect today. What He promised you before the foundation of the world is still valid right now!

2. God Backed His Promise with His Own Integrity!

Hebrews 6:17-18 reveals something absolutely powerful: God swore an oath on His own integrity to keep His promise! When humans make oaths, they swear by something greater than themselves. But God had nothing greater to swear by, so He swore by Himself! God said, “I swear by God!”

How this applies to you:

— God put His own reputation on the line for you! If the promise fails, God’s integrity fails. But since God cannot lie and cannot fail, the promise is as secure as God Himself! You’re not hoping the promise might work out; you’re resting in the guarantee of God’s character!

— Two unchangeable things guarantee your promise: (1) God’s promise and (2) God’s oath. If one wasn’t enough, God added the second! He gave you double security, double confirmation, double assurance! This isn’t wishful thinking; this is divine certainty!

— It is IMPOSSIBLE for God to lie! Not difficult. Not unlikely. IMPOSSIBLE! God’s very nature makes lying impossible. He can’t contradict His own character. So when He promises, it’s as good as done! The promise doesn’t depend on probability; it’s backed by impossibility; the impossibility of God being false!

— God didn’t promise you because you were worthy; He promised because He is faithful! Your qualification for the promise isn’t your goodness; it’s His grace. You didn’t earn the promise, and you can’t lose it! It’s anchored in who God is, not who you are!

— When God says “I will,” you can consider it done! Numbers 23:19 confirms that when God makes a promise, He will do it. Not might do it, not should do it, but WILL do it! His word is His bond, and His bond is unbreakable!

— The promise is your inheritance, not your incentive! God didn’t promise you blessings IF you perform well. He promised you blessings BECAUSE Jesus performed perfectly! This shifts everything from your effort to His grace!

3. No One Has the Authority to Add Conditions to God’s Promise!

Paul says, “no one can set aside or add to” the covenant. This is critical! The Judaizers in Galatia were trying to add circumcision and Law-keeping to the promise. But Paul says you can’t do that! Grace plus anything equals nothing!

How this applies to you:

— The promise came by grace through faith, period! Not grace through faith PLUS circumcision. Not grace through faith PLUS keeping the Sabbath. Not grace through faith PLUS perfect church attendance. When you add requirements to grace, you actually cancel grace!

— Your Pastor can’t add conditions to what God made unconditional! No matter how well-meaning, no religious leader has the authority to modify God’s contract. They can teach you how to access the promise through faith, but they can’t add works requirements that God never included!

— When I was a Private in Germany, I had a Platoon Sergeant who did not like. She tried to get me to change the way I wore my uniform pants or hat. My stuff was ironed stiff, my boots were spit-shined, and my hat was pressed. I took pride in my uniform. But she tried to find things to critique. However, I had the regulation (AR 670-1 memorized, and I had a copy in my pocket. She could be upset all she wanted, but she could not change the regulation. This is what Paul is saying about the Judaizers. They may not have liked that non-Jews were not the same as them. That non-Jews now had access to The Blessing of Abraham. That non-Jews did not have to get circumcised or keep the Sabbath. But there was nothing they could do about it, becuase they were not authorized to ADD anything to God’s promise. The Promise given to Abraham was settled 430 years before the Law, so the Law did not apply!

— Denominations can’t create their own fine print! Some churches say you must speak in tongues. Others say you must be baptized in the name of Jesus ONLY! Others say you must dress a certain way. But none of these things were in God’s original promise to Abraham! You can’t add what God didn’t require!

— Cultural traditions can’t override God’s grace! Some say you must give up certain foods or observe certain days. But if it’s not in the promise, it’s not required for the promise! Freedom in Christ means you’re not bound by cultural additions to God’s simple contract!

— The Law came 430 years after the promise and couldn’t change it! If the Mosaic Law itself (given directly by God) couldn’t modify the terms of the Abrahamic promise, then man-made religious rules certainly can’t! The promise was set before the Law arrived and remains unchanged after grace fulfilled the Law!

— Your responsibility is to RECEIVE, not to ACHIEVE! Stop trying to earn what’s already been promised. Stop trying to qualify for what grace has already qualified you for. Your job is simple: believe the promise, access it by faith, and walk in it!

4. God’s Unchangeable Promise Gives You Unshakable Confidence!

Because God’s promise cannot be altered, cancelled, or modified, you can have absolute confidence that what He promised will come to pass! Your confidence isn’t in your consistency; it’s in God’s unchangeable character!

How this applies to you:

— You can face today knowing that your tomorrow is already secured! The promise covering your future is the same promise that covered Abraham. It hasn’t weakened with age; it’s still in full force! What God promised about your destiny is as certain as if it’s already happened!

— Your faith doesn’t have to be perfect because God’s promise already is! Even when your faith wavers, the promise stands firm. Abraham had moments of doubt, yet the promise never changed. Your occasional struggle with faith doesn’t cancel what God declared over you!

— You can pray with authority because you’re standing on an unchangeable promise! When you pray, you’re not begging God to do something He’s reluctant to do. You’re accessing what He’s already promised to provide! Your prayers are withdrawals from an account that never runs dry!

— Your past doesn’t change God’s promise for your future! Maybe you’ve failed. Maybe you’ve messed up. Maybe you’ve wandered off course. But the promise remains! What God declared over you before you were born didn’t include a clause for your mistakes!

— Economic crashes can’t crash God’s economy! The world’s financial systems may fluctuate, but God’s promise of provision stands firm. His Blessing isn’t tied to Wall Street; it’s tied to His unchangeable Word! While others panic, you can rest!

— You’re not waiting to see IF the promise will happen; you’re watching HOW it unfolds! The outcome is guaranteed by God’s oath. Your role is to stay in faith and watch God’s creativity in bringing His promise to pass in your life! The “if” is settled; now you get to experience the “how”!

— This gives you the confidence to live boldly! When you know the promise can’t fail, you can take faith risks. You can step out of your comfort zone. You can attempt great things for God because the promise of His presence and provision cannot be revoked! You’re not gambling on God’s goodness; you’re banking on His unchangeable character!

— Government shutdowns and layoff threats can’t shut down God’s supply! Right now, many are worried about job security and financial stability because of what’s happening in Washington. But your confidence must be in God, not the government! He is your Source, not your employer. Your provision flows from Heaven’s economy, not Capitol Hill’s decisions! What man shuts down, God keeps running!

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that Your promises are legally binding and eternally unchangeable!

What You promised Abraham is now mine through Christ Jesus!

No person, no system, no circumstance can cancel what You have confirmed!

You backed Your promise with Your own integrity and sealed it with Your oath!

It is IMPOSSIBLE for You to lie, so Your promise is as certain as Your existence!

No one has the authority to add conditions to what You made unconditional!

I live by faith and my faith accesses Your grace!

My confidence isn’t in my consistency but in Your unchangeable character!

The Blessing of Abraham goes before me!

I am not waiting to see IF it will happen; I’m watching HOW it unfolds!

I am Living the Grace Life and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
