Grace in Galatians (Part 83): Why 99% Is Not Good Enough

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.

“The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, ‘The person who does these things will live by them.'”

“But keeping the Law does not require faith, but self-effort. For the Law teaches, ‘If you practice the principles of law, you must follow all of them.'”

“Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.”

“You might follow all of God’s Law. But if you fail to obey only one command, you are guilty of breaking all the commands in that Law.”

Setting the Stage:

For the past couple of messages, we have driven home the point that the righteous live by faith, not by law-keeping. We discovered that you can’t pay for righteousness that was already bought. Today, Paul reveals something even more radical: even if you were able to achieve 99% righteousness through the Law, you would still fail! Why? Because the Law demands 100% perfection, 100% of the time.

The Law says, “Be perfect or be condemned.” Grace says, “Jesus was perfect FOR you and your job is to receive it by faith!“

The Judaizers wanted to add just a little Law to their faith, keep a few commandments here and there, and follow some traditions here and there. But Paul makes it explicitly clear: The Law is NOT based on faith! It’s based on DOING. And if you’re going to DO the Law, you must DO it ALL: perfectly, completely, and perpetually. Miss one command, and you’ve broken the entire system.

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. The Law Demands Perfect Performance, Not Partial Participation!

When Paul quotes Leviticus 18:5, he’s showing that the Law operates on an all-or-nothing basis. You can’t pick and choose which laws to follow. It’s a package deal: take it all or leave it all!

How this applies to you:

— The Law is like a chain; break one link and the whole chain is broken! James 2:10 makes this crystal clear. You can keep 612 of the 613 commandments, but fail in one and you’ve failed completely. That’s a 99.8% success rate, but in Law’s grading system, 99.8% is still an F!

— Selective obedience is still disobedience in the Law’s eyes! You can’t say, “I don’t lie, steal, or murder, so I’m good.” The Law says, “What about that time you coveted? What about that moment of worry? What about that flash of anger?” One violation makes you a lawbreaker, period!

— The Law doesn’t grade on a curve; it demands perfection! There’s no “A for effort” in the Law. There’s no “at least you tried” consolation prize. The Law demands 100% compliance, 100% of the time, in thought, word, and deed!

— Your best day of law-keeping still falls short of God’s standard! Even on your most religious, most disciplined, most holy day, you still fall short. Why? Because the Law demands perfection not just in action but in motivation, thought, and heart attitude!

— Religious people love to lower the bar to where they can reach it! They redefine holiness to match their performance level. But God’s standard never changes. Perfection is perfection, and anything less is failure under Law!

— Thank God you’re not under Law but under grace! Grace doesn’t lower God’s standard; grace provides Jesus who met the standard FOR you! Here’s the gospel: The Law demanded and grace provided FOR YOU!

2. Faith Trusts What God Did; Law Trusts What You Do!

The TPT translation of Galatians 3:12 reveals a critical distinction: “Keeping the law does not require faith, but self-effort.” You see, faith and self-effort run on opposite fuel! One runs on God’s power; the other runs on human willpower.

How this applies to you:

— When you trust in your performance, you stop trusting in His promises! You can’t have your confidence in two places at once. Either you’re confident in what Christ did, or you’re confident in what you can do. Split confidence is really no confidence at all!

— Law makes YOU the hero of your story; faith makes JESUS the hero! Under the Law, your salvation depends on your strength, your discipline, your consistency. Under faith, it all depends on Jesus. Whose resume would you rather rely on: yours or His?

— I told you before that self-effort always leads to either pride or despair! When you succeed, you become prideful. When you fail, you become depressed. But faith keeps you humble in success and hopeful in failure because it’s not about you!

— The Law is a mirror that shows your need; faith is the hand that receives the provision! Imagine being hungry and staring at a picture of food. That’s the Law. It shows what you need but can’t provide it. Faith reaches out and takes the bread of life!

— When you operate in self-effort, you get self-sized results! But when you operate in faith, you get God-sized results! Your effort can only produce what’s humanly possible; faith produces the impossible!

— Religious activity without genuine faith is just like putting on a spiritual show! You can go through all the motions, perform all the rituals, check all the boxes, but without faith, you’re just acting out a script. You are going through the motions, but there is no power because God is not in it. And God will never be in it until you start living by faith. Once you understand this, you realize that countless people go to church on Sundays out of habit or tradition, with no actual faith in their lives. To live by faith, you must genuinely believe in God and rely on Him!

3. Law Is An Endless Cycle; Faith Is A Finished Victory!

Notice carefully what Paul quotes: “The person who DOES these things will live by them.” The Law requires continuous doing with no finish line. But faith celebrates what is already DONE!

How this applies to you:

— The Law is like a subscription you can never cancel! Every day, the bill comes due. Every day, you owe perfect obedience. Miss one payment, and you’re in default. But faith is like receiving a lifetime membership that Jesus paid for in full!

— Under Law, yesterday’s obedience doesn’t count for today! You can’t store up righteousness like rollover minutes (for those of you old enough to remember those). Every day you start from zero. But under grace, you wake up every morning as righteous as Jesus is righteous! Not because of you, but because of HIM!

— The Law is a test you take every day and can never pass! Even if you score 100% today, tomorrow you start over. And one failing grade fails the whole course. But faith says Jesus took the test and gave you His perfect score permanently! It’s like logging in to see your grades and being notified that someone took the test for you, got a perfect grade, and now their grade will be attributed to your account forever!

— Religion is like trying to fill a bucket with holes in it! No matter how much you pour in, it keeps leaking out. You’re never full, never satisfied, never enough. But grace sealed all the holes and filled you to overflowing once and for all!

— Under the Law, you’re always becoming; under grace, you already ARE! The Law keeps you in process but never lets you arrive. You’re always “trying to be” holy, righteous, acceptable. But grace declares you ARE holy, righteous, and accepted in the Beloved RIGHT NOW!

— The Law measures your distance from God; faith celebrates your union with Christ! The Law constantly reminds you how far short you fall. But faith reminds you that you’re seated with Christ in heavenly places. You can’t get any closer than IN HIM!

4. The Law Creates Distance; Faith Creates Intimacy!

The Law was given amidst thunder, lightning, and the command “Don’t come near!” Even when God wanted to reveal Himself to Moses, He could not fully do so. But faith says, “Draw near with confidence to the throne of grace!” We get to draw so near that we are IN HIM!

How this applies to you:

— The Law keeps you at arm’s length; faith brings you into intimacy with the Father! Under the Law, you’re a subject before a King. Under grace, you’re a child with a Father. Same God, totally different relationship!

— Performance-based religion creates fear; grace-based faith creates freedom! You can’t be intimate with someone you’re afraid of. Perfect love casts out fear, and God’s love is perfected toward you in Christ!

— The Law says, “Watch out… and Stay back!”; grace says, “Come near… and Come boldly!” Hebrews 4:16 invites you to approach God’s throne with confidence. This confidence is based on Jesus’ worthiness, not yours!

— Religious people have a God they’re scared of; grace people have a Father they run TO! When you mess up under Law, you hide. When you mess up under grace, you run TO God, not FROM Him!

— Under the Law, sin separates; under grace, sin is already separated! Your sins have been removed as far as the east is from the west. They’re not between you and God anymore; they’re under the blood! Hebrews 8:12 declares, “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” When God says “no more,” He means NO MORE; not on your worst day, not in your weakest moment, not ever!

— The Law produces servants; grace produces sons and daughters! Both might do the same tasks, but the motivation is completely different. One works from fear; the other works from love!

Father, I thank You that I’m not under Law but under grace!

I choose faith over self-effort in every area of my life!

The Law demanded perfection, but Jesus provided it FOR me!

My relationship with You is based on Christ’s performance, not mine!

I approach Your throne with confidence, not cowardice!

I am not a slave. I am not a servant. I am a son!
