Grace in Galatians (Part 190) – Don’t Bow To Religious Pressure

Today, we continue our focus on THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, as we learn to maintain our posture of faith after God has revealed His plans for our future.

As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.

Setting the Stage:

Yesterday, we walked through Galatians 6:12 from the side of the Judaizers. We exposed their motive. They were running a performance, not a ministry. They wanted to impress people on one hand and avoid persecution on the other. They were trying to embrace Christianity while at the same time keeping their reputation intact in front of the religious establishment. And they were forcing the Galatians to be circumcised to make all of that possible. Today, we look at the same verse from the OTHER side. The receiving side. The Galatian side. Because every Judaizer in this story was pressuring somebody. And somebody had to decide whether they were going to bow to the pressure or stand firm in the freedom Christ had already given them.

Look at the verse one more time. Paul says these religious leaders “are trying to COMPEL you to be circumcised.” Read that word. Compel. This was not a polite invitation. This was not a quiet suggestion. This was religious peer pressure. And Paul writes the entire book of Galatians for one reason: to help these believers stand their ground.

Here’s what we must understand today. Religious pressure is real. It is one of the most consistent battles you will fight in your walk with God. And it almost never comes from the world. It comes from inside the church. Galatians 2:4 TPT calls them “false brothers who had been secretly smuggled into the church to spy on the freedom we have in the Anointed One Jesus, with the intent to bring us into bondage.” Read that line again. They came in looking like one of us. They sat in our pews. They quoted our Scriptures. But their goal was to take away the freedom Christ had purchased on the cross. And the people they targeted were brand new believers who did not yet know how to recognize the pressure for what it was.

Today, I want to walk you through four things you have to settle in your heart so that when the religious pressure comes, you do not bow. Let’s get into it.

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. Religious Pressure Is Real, And It Often Wears A Bible.

The Judaizers had Scripture in their hands. They could quote the Law. They knew the traditions. They had a pedigree. They looked spiritual. And that is what made their pressure so dangerous. The most effective religious pressure rarely shows up looking like an attack. It shows up looking like concern. It shows up looking like a senior brother trying to disciple you. It shows up looking like wisdom from a more mature believer. It shows up wearing a smile, holding a Bible, and using all the right words. And before you know it, you have been moved off the simple gospel of grace.

How this applies to you:

— Galatians 2:4 TPT calls them “false brothers (who had been secretly smuggled into the church) who came to spy on the freedom we have in the Anointed One Jesus, with the intent to bring us into bondage.” Notice the language. Smuggled in. Spying. With INTENT. Not accidental, but strategic. The enemy knows that one of the fastest ways to neutralize a free believer is to pull him back under the law through somebody who looks just like him, especially someone he respects.

— Some of the most spiritually dangerous statements you will ever hear sound like this: “I’m just concerned about your soul.” “A truly spiritual person would…” “Are you sure that’s what God really meant?” Watch out for “concern” that is actually control. Watch out for “discipleship” that is actually an attempt at domination. Watch out for “spiritual maturity” that is actually religious manipulation.

— The Galatians were not being attacked by Roman soldiers. They were being pressured by religious brothers.

— Paul wrote in Galatians 1:7 that there are people who “want to twist and distort the gospel of Christ.” Notice that distortion is not deletion. Distortion looks similar. Distortion uses the same words. Distortion sounds spiritual. But distortion will quietly move you off grace if you are not paying attention.

— I have seen this happen many times. A young believer comes to Christ, gets gloriously saved, walks in joy, and then somebody in their church starts pressuring them about their hair, their clothes, their music, their Bible translation, or a hundred other things that have nothing to do with the gospel. The pressure is real, and it is constant, and it almost always comes from people who look very spiritual.

— In THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, ask God to help you discover the difference between conviction from the Holy Spirit and pressure from religious people. One sets you free; the other makes you bound.

— Here is the good news. The Spirit of God who lives inside of you is sharper than any religious spirit that ever comes against you. You are not defenseless. The Anointing teaches you all things, including the difference between what is from God and what is just dressed up to look like Him. Walk in the Spirit, and the Spirit will show you the truth every single time!

2. Religious People Offer Purity Tests They Cannot Pass.

The Judaizers had a purity test, and the test was circumcision. If you wanted to be considered a “real” believer, you had to pass it. Pay the price. Make the cut. Get the mark. But here is what Paul exposes. The Judaizers themselves were quietly failing the harder test of the cross. They were avoiding persecution. They were not willing to suffer for the pure gospel of grace. Jesus saw this exact pattern in the Pharisees. Matthew 23:4 AMPC says, “They tie up heavy loads, hard to bear, and place them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not lift a finger to help bear them.” That is the religious purity test in plain language. Pass this test. Pay this price. Look like this. Sound like this. Wear this. Meanwhile, the test-givers do not measure up to the very standard they are imposing. Religious people are world-class at offering purity tests they themselves cannot pass.

How this applies to you:

— A purity test is a standard somebody imposes on you to decide if you are “really” in the group, and most religious purity tests are written by people who could never pass the tests they are offering.

— The Judaizers were handing out exams they were quietly failing. That is the most consistent pattern in religious history, and it is alive and well in the modern church.

— Acts 15:10 records Peter standing up at the Jerusalem council and saying about the Law, “We and our fathers were not able to carry that burden.” Peter was honest. The Law was a yoke nobody could bear. And he refused to lay on others a yoke he could not carry himself. That is the heart of a real shepherd.

— Run from any teacher who hands you a test they have never had to pass.

— I have been working since I was 13 and leading since I was 18. Here’s something I have noticed. The leaders who are resented are the ones who demand from their people what they do not do themselves. 

— Real spiritual authority always sets the standard. Instead of preaching something to you and then both of us have to try to live it, I should be only preaching to you what I’m living.

— In THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, discover this: the religious test you have been pressuring yourself to pass is often a test the people pressuring you have already failed. Stop taking their exam over and over. Run YOUR race. The Holy Spirit will teach you what to focus on.

— Here is the celebration of the cross. The only test that ever mattered was the test Jesus already took on your behalf. He passed it. His grade is now your grade. Accept the finished work of Jesus!

3. Do Not Sacrifice Your Freedom To Make Religious People Comfortable.

The Galatians could have ended the pressure in five minutes. All they had to do was give in. All they had to do was submit to circumcision, observe a few extra holy days, and stop preaching pure grace. The pressure would have stopped immediately. But Paul tells them, “Do not do it.” Why? Because the price they would have paid for that peace was the loss of the very freedom Christ had bought for them. Galatians 2:5 TPT says of Paul and his team, “We didn’t give in to their pressure—not for one moment—so that the truth of the gospel would continue to be available to you.” Read that line carefully. Not for one moment. Your freedom in Christ was not bought so you could trade it for somebody else’s approval.

How this applies to you:

— Galatians 5:1 TPT says, “the Anointed One has set us free—not partially, but completely and wonderfully free! We must always cherish this truth and stubbornly refuse to go back into the bondage of our past.” Notice the word stubbornly. There are some things you have to stubbornly refuse. Religious pressure is one of them.

— The cross paid too high a price for you to surrender your freedom just so other people can be comfortable.

— Colossians 2:16 TPT says, “don’t let anyone judge you for what you eat or drink, or insist that you keep certain holy days or observe new moon celebrations or Sabbaths.” Paul is giving you permission to ignore religious gatekeepers. You do not owe them an explanation. You do not owe them an apology. You do not owe them anything but love.

— Some of you have been bending under religious pressure for years. Stop. The cross set you free, not partially, but completely. Walk in it.

— I had to learn this in my own ministry. There are some preachers, some leaders, and some religious people I was tempted to change for (at least while I was around them), just to keep the peace. But the Holy Spirit corrected me. He said, “Son, I did not call you to make THEM comfortable. I called you to be faithful to ME. I need you to be YOU!” That moment changed my ministry forever. Thankfully, now I’m very comfortable being me. 

— The freedom Jesus died to secure for you should not be traded for anything, especially not for the approval or the appeasement of men. 

4. Stand Rooted In The Grace That Made You Free.

The cure for bowing to religious pressure is being rooted in something deeper than the pressure. You do not resist the wind by fighting the wind. You resist the wind by having roots that go deeper than the wind can reach. The mature believer is not the believer who has never felt the pressure. The mature believer is the believer who is so deeply rooted in grace that the pressure cannot move him. 

How this applies to you:

— If you stand firm in the truth of the cross, the finished work of Jesus, the immeasurable nature of God’s grace, and the anointing that is on your life to perform your calling, you will not be moved by the opinions of men.

— When religious pressure comes, the answer is not to argue. The answer is not to debate. The answer is not to convince anyone of anything. The answer is to be ROOTED. A tree does not negotiate with the wind. A tree just keeps standing because its roots are deeper than the storm.

— Romans 14:4 TPT says, “Why would you judge or pass sentence on the servant of someone else? Whether he stands faithfully or falls flat on his face before his own master is no business of yours. And yet his Master has the resources to make him stand strong and faithful.” Notice the last line. Your Master has the resources to make you stand strong and faithful. You do not have to stress your way through religious pressure. God will hold you up.

— Your standing with God is settled at the cross, and the Holy Spirit gives you the power to endure and overcome anything that comes your way, including pressure from religious people. 

— I have learned that the deepest believers I know are the quietest under pressure. They do not fight back. They do not get loud. They do not argue. They just stand. 

— The cross is the deepest root system in the universe. Send your roots down into God’s amazing grace. 

— In closing, meditate on this: A tree planted in grace does not need to fight. It does not need to argue. It does not need to prove itself to anyone. It just keeps growing in the soil that planted it. And one day, the very people who tried to push you over will look up and see how tall you have grown, because you refused to move from the grace that made you who you are. You are not just standing. You are FLOURISHING in the soil of God’s unmerited favor! Walk in freedom, embrace God’s grace, and let your life speak for you! 

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that the cross You provided is the deepest root system in the universe, and I am rooted in Your grace, not in religious pressure!

I refuse to bow to religious pressure, no matter who it comes from or how spiritual it sounds!

I recognize religious pressure for what it is, and I will not let it pull me out of the freedom Christ already purchased for me!

I refuse to carry burdens You did not ask me to carry, and I refuse to lay on others burdens I would not carry myself!

I stubbornly refuse to go back into the bondage of my past!

I am rooted, anchored, and grounded in the finished work of the cross!

I am not righteous because of what I do, and I’m not righteous because of what I failed to do. I’m only righteous because of what Jesus did!

I owe religious people nothing but love, and I refuse to apologize for the freedom Jesus bought for me!

I am living THE GRACE LIFE, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
