Grace in Galatians (Part 155): Things That Pull You Out of God’s PLAN

Today, we continue our focus on THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, as we learn to maintain our posture of faith after God has revealed His plans for our future.

As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.

Setting the Stage:

In our last message, we studied Galatians 5:25 and Paul’s call to march in step with the Holy Spirit. We learned that the word “walk” in verse 25 is a military term in the original Greek that means to stay in rank, keep cadence, and march in formation with the Spirit who gave us life. It was a powerful word picture. Now, in verse 26, Paul tells us what breaks formation. He identifies three specific attitudes that will pull you out of step with the Holy Spirit: conceit, provocation, and envy. This is not a random list. This is a targeted warning. Paul is saying: If you want to walk in the Spirit, you must guard against the things that will take you out of alignment with Him.

The NKJV puts it plainly: “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” This is a chain reaction of the flesh and Paul is warning us against it.

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. Conceit is the Opposite of the Spirit-Led Life.

Paul begins this verse with conceit, and that is intentional. Conceit is the root. Provocation and envy are the fruit. In the original Greek language, the word translated “conceited” is a compound word that combines the ideas of “empty” and “glory.” It literally means vainglory. This person is chasing glory that has no substance behind it. 

They want recognition, applause, and validation from people, not from God. They build their identity on the opinions of others instead of on the finished work of Christ. Romans 12:3 says, “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Notice the solution is not to think less of yourself. It is to think accurately of yourself. You are a child of God, filled with His Spirit, created for a purpose that predates your birth. That is your identity. But when you add to that identity something that God did not assign, you step into conceit.  

How this applies to you:

— The word translated “conceited” in the original Greek literally means “empty glory.” It describes a person who craves honor they did not earn and glory that belongs to God alone.

— When your identity is rooted in what Christ did for you, you never need to inflate yourself because you are already seated in heavenly places with Him (Eph 2:6).

— The grace life doesn’t produce big heads; it produces bent knees. When you truly understand what Jesus did for you, there’s nothing left to be proud about in yourself. All boasting is silenced at the cross (1 Cor. 1:29).

—  When you walk with the Holy Spirit, and you learn to believe what God believes about you, you actually get to the place where you are settled in your divine identity, and you don’t need the approval of men.

— The grace life removes the pressure to perform for people. You are not on stage. You are in Christ. That is enough.

— Religion creates a hierarchy of performance where people compete for recognition. Grace creates a family where every member has value because of Jesus.

— In THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, discover that true honor comes from God, not from the applause of men. Stop chasing empty glory and start resting in the fullness of what God has already declared over your life.

— If you find yourself craving attention or recognition, pause. That is the flesh talking. The Spirit will never lead you to build a monument to yourself. He will always point you back to Jesus. It’s ALL ABOUT HIM!

2. Provocation Destroys What the Spirit is Building.

The word translated “provoking” in the original Greek carries a very specific meaning. It means to call someone out, to challenge them to a contest, to invite them to battle. This is not a minor disagreement. This is a spirit of competition that says, “I need to prove I am better than you.” And where does it come from? It comes directly from conceit. You challenge people. You stir up conflict. You create an atmosphere of rivalry instead of unity. Philippians 2:3 in the TPT says, “Be free from pride-filled opinions, for they will only harm your cherished unity. Don’t allow self-promotion to hide in your hearts.” 

How this applies to you:

— Paul is warning against a competitive spirit that turns brothers and sisters into rivals.

— The Spirit produces love, joy, peace, and gentleness. Provocation produces division, strife, and resentment. You cannot walk in both at the same time.

— If you constantly feel the need to one-up someone, correct someone, or prove that you are right, that is not the Spirit leading you. That is the flesh. The Spirit leads you into humility, not arguments.

— In my years in the military, I learned something important: the soldiers who constantly challenged authority and sowed seeds of discord were the ones who broke unit cohesion. The strongest teams were built on trust, not competition. The same is true in the body of Christ.

— You can disagree with someone without provoking them. Provocation takes it from disagreement to straight-out conflict. 

— In THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, discover that the people around you are not your competition. They are your co-laborers. God placed them in your life for a reason.

— Before you respond in a heated moment, ask yourself: Am I being led by the Spirit right now, or am I being led by my ego? That one question will save you from a world of regret.

3. Envy Poisons the Well of Grace.

The third word in Paul’s warning is envy, and the original Greek word means something deeper than just wanting what someone else has. It means being resentful that they have it at all. The ancient philosophers described it as “grief at someone else’s good.” Think about that. Envy is pain at another person’s blessing. It is the opposite of love. Where love rejoices in another’s success (1 Corinthians 13:6), envy grieves over it. James 3:16 puts it bluntly: “For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” Envy does not just affect your attitude. It opens the door to confusion and every kind of evil. It is a blessing blocker of the highest order. 

How this applies to you:

— Envy is not just wanting what someone else has. It is being bitter that they have it. It is pain at another person’s blessing, and it is the exact opposite of the love that the Spirit produces.

— When you walk in grace, you understand that God’s blessings are not a limited resource. What He gave to your brother or sister does not take away from what He has planned for you. There is no shortage in the Kingdom.

— Envy says, “Why them and not me?” Grace says, “If God did it for them, He can do it for me too!” One is rooted in resentment. The other is rooted in faith.

— Celebrate the success of others. When you can genuinely rejoice over someone else’s breakthrough, you are proving that your heart is free from the grip of envy. That is a sign of spiritual maturity.

— The TPT says we must “forsake all jealousy that diminishes the value of others.” Notice that envy diminishes. It reduces people. It shrinks them in your eyes. But God created each person with unique, irreplaceable value.

— Envy will block your own blessings. It closes your heart to what God is trying to do in your life because you are too busy looking at what He is doing in someone else’s life. Keep your eyes on your own assignment.

— When you are truly grateful for your own blessings, you don’t have time to be jealous of someone else’s. Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 says God keeps the grateful person so occupied with the joy of their own life that envy never gets a foothold. Stay focused on YOUR lot. Enjoy YOUR journey. God has given YOU enough to celebrate!

4. You are an Original, So Walk Like One.

The Passion Translation adds a beautiful insight in verse 26: “For each of us is an original.” This is the antidote to conceit, provocation, and envy. When you understand that God made you an original, you stop competing with copies. 

How this applies to you:

— God made you an original. You are not a copy of anyone else, and no one else is a copy of you. Your gifts, your calling, your purpose, and your personality were all designed by God on purpose, for a purpose.

— God is not comparing you to anyone. So, stop doing what God refuses to do.

— 1 Corinthians 12:18 says God set each member in the body “just as He pleased.” Your placement is not an accident. Your position in the body of Christ was a divine decision. Honor it.

— When you walk as the original God created you to be, you give other people permission to do the same. Your authenticity becomes an invitation for others to step into their own calling.

— Think about it this way: the world has never seen you before, and it will never see you again. There is no backup version of you in production. When you shrink back, compare yourself, or try to be someone else, the world loses the one thing only you could give it. Walk in your originality like you mean it. God doesn’t make mistakes, and He didn’t make one when He made you.

— In THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, discover the freedom that comes from being yourself in Christ. Stop trying to be a better version of someone else. Be the best version of who God already made you to be.

— The Spirit-led life is not a competition. It is a calling! Walk in yours with divine confidence, knowing that no one else on this planet has the Grace to be you!

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that I am free from the grip of conceit, provocation, and envy! I walk in the Spirit, and I refuse to walk in step with my ego!

I am not chasing empty glory. My identity is rooted in what Christ did for me, and that is more than enough!

I will not provoke my brothers and sisters. I will not compete with the people God placed in my life. I choose unity over rivalry, and love over self-promotion!

I celebrate the success of others because their breakthrough does not diminish my own. I am secure in who God made me to be!

I am an original. God set me in the body just as He pleased, and I honor the placement He gave me!

I step into this day knowing that I’m called to be me. I have the Grace to do it, and no one else on this planet has my divine assignment. 

I am living the Grace Life, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
