Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.
As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.
Key scriptures for this year:
(2 Corinthians 9:8 TPT)
"Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do."
(Galatians 5:4 TPT)
"If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!"
(Romans 6:14 ERV)
"Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God's grace."
(1 Corinthians 15:10 CEV)
"But God treated me with undeserved grace! He made me what I am, and his grace wasn't wasted. I worked much harder than any of the other apostles, although it was really God's grace at work and not me."
Scripture we will study today:
(Galatians 4:3 TPT)
“So this is the way it was with us before Christ came. We were like children, spending all our time under the control of the religious and worldly principles of the Law.”
Supporting scriptures:
(Colossians 2:20 NLT)
“You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, ‘Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!’?”
(Romans 8:2 NLT)
“And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.”
(Colossians 2:8 NLT)
“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”
Setting the Stage:
Yesterday, we learned that you’re no longer a minor heir under external guardians; you’re a mature son with the power to be led by the Holy Spirit from the inside! But here’s the problem: many believers are still living under the old system! They’re saved by grace but operating in religion and worldliness! They have the Holy Spirit inside them, but they’re still trying to perform for God (religious) and prove themselves to people (worldly)!
Today, Paul gives us a direct command by identifying exactly what controlled us before Christ: “the religious and worldly principles of the Law.” This wasn’t just bondage, it was dual bondage! You were trapped from two directions simultaneously! Religious control kept you focused on external rituals, rules, and human mediators to approach God. Worldly control kept you dependent on carnal effort, human performance, and fleshly strength to please God!
Jesus and His grace deliver us from both the bondage of religion and the limitations of our humanity! The dual control is broken, but you have to stop going back to it! You have to stop measuring your spirituality by religious checklists! You have to stop proving your worth through worldly performance! Grace has replaced dual control with singular, Spirit-led freedom!
So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.
1. The “Religious” Control: A System Built on External Rules and Mediation.
The Law system was inherently religious because it placed emphasis on external rites, performance, and mediation (priests, sacrifices, physical temples) as the means to approach God. Paul says we were “spending all our time under the control” of this system. This led to a life motivated by fear and stress rather than love and rest. This is the very system Christ ended to give us direct access to the Father!
How this applies to you:
— The religious control you were under kept you focused on performing to gain access to God, making your relationship conditional on your sinless behavior, which is exhausting and impossible to maintain! You were always one mistake away from losing your standing, always one sin away from being disqualified! That’s not a relationship, that’s religious torture!
— Think about this in practical terms: under religious control, you’d wake up every morning and measure your spiritual temperature by how many rules you kept the day before, how long you prayed, whether you read enough chapters, if you fasted enough, if you gave enough! But under grace, you measure your spiritual health by the quality of your Spirit-to-spirit fellowship with the Father! That’s the shift from religion to relationship.
— True freedom means you have moved from a system that needed priests to mediate on your behalf to a relationship where you are a priest and have full, direct access to the Father, Spirit-to-spirit! Hebrews 10:19 says we can “boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus!” You no longer need human help to get a word from God; the Holy Spirit lives in you and speaks directly to your spirit!
— You must stop living by a “religious checklist” to secure or maintain your place in God’s family, because your sonship is already established and secure! Your identity is settled and not up for review every time you make a mistake! The Judge stamped “APPROVED” on your file the moment you believed, and that approval doesn’t change based on your daily performance!
— The Law built walls and created divisions by establishing different levels of religious privilege. There were the high priest, regular priests, Levites, Israelites, and Gentiles! But grace tore those walls down and created absolute equality in Christ! You are just as much a son as any pastor, bishop, or pope! Stop trying to climb a spiritual ladder that doesn’t exist in the Kingdom!
— Religious people will try to put mandates on you to honor them based on their titles, degrees, or pedigree, but the revelation of grace destroys their hierarchies! Your spiritual value is determined only by Christ, who lives equally in every believer! The janitor filled with the Spirit has the same access to God as the senior pastor!
2. The “Worldly” Control: A System Based on Carnal Effort and Human Standards.
Paul uses the phrase “worldly principles” (or elemental things of the world) to show that the Law, despite its divine origin, operated on a carnal, natural, human level. This system was designed to be administered without the Holy Spirit, making it dependent on human strength, performance, and outward adherence to rules. This focus on self-effort easily led to comparison, competition, and a sense of hierarchy.
How this applies to you:
— The Law was a worldly system because it relied on the weakness of our sinful nature and demanded a perfection that no human effort could achieve! It was designed to prove to us that we needed a Savior. It did that, but it also created a system built on distinctions and levels of access based on what tribe you were born into, what you did every day as your profession, how well you performed it, and who you performed for. In other words, it was a worldly system, not different than the system of the world people deal with today. The problem is that God’s Kingdom is supposed to be different!
— Here’s how worldly control shows up today in church culture: those in ministry judge each other by their titles, the reach of their platforms, the type of seminary degrees they have, the size of their ministry, etc. But grace is not based on any worldly credentials or human achievement! The homeless man filled with the Spirit is equally as righteous as the megachurch pastor! We may be called to do different things, but we are not in competition. The world has crept into the church.
— This is not just about clergy. This mindset can impact anyone. You must refuse to let anyone “capture you with empty philosophies” or “high-sounding nonsense” that comes from “human thinking” and external rules! Colossians 2:8 warns about this very trap! Don’t let worldly thinking cause you to see yourself too high or too low. You must learn to believe what God believes about you!
— Religious and worldly thinking is taxing. You wake up tired because you went to bed worried that you didn’t pray long enough, give enough, serve enough, or witness enough! But your Father is committed to your growth, not your punishment, and He has already accepted you because you are clothed with Christ!
— Here’s a family example: worldly control says, “My kids need to see me as the perfect Christian parent who never struggles, never doubts, never fails.” Grace says, “My kids need to see me as a redeemed sinner who walks with God through struggles, depends on grace in doubts, and gets back up after failures!” Worldly control creates fake and phony people, because the truth is, none of us measure up to God’s holiness in our humanity. Grace, on the other hand, creates authentic relationships with God and man!
3. The Law’s Dual Control Resulted in Spiritual Immaturity and Limited Access
The core problem with being under the “control of the religious and worldly principles” was that it kept God’s people in a state of childhood, never maturing in the Spirit.
How this applies to you:
— Remember yesterday’s illustration about the minor heir? He owned everything but accessed nothing because he lacked maturity and knowledge! That was you under the Law’s dual control! Just like that heir, before Christ, you legally owned everything through Abraham’s promise, but you could practically experience nothing because you lacked the internal transformation and the guidance of the Spirit!
— Think about how this worked: you had the promise of blessing (religious side), but you couldn’t access it without perfect performance (worldly side)! You had the promise of provision (religious), but you needed to earn it through obedience (worldly)! The dual control created a spiritual catch-22 that kept you perpetually immature and frustrated!
— The Law fostered spiritual immaturity because it focused on external obedience instead of the “Spirit-to-spirit connection” that leads to true maturity, understanding, and dominion! It’s like trying to mature a child by giving them a rulebook instead of a relationship with their father! Rules produce compliance at best, rebellion at worst; relationship produces true change!
— When you embrace Law-based thinking today, you are spiritually regressing back to a state of minority and dependence on human oversight, even though you are called to be a mature son or daughter!
— Immaturity doesn’t change ownership, but it absolutely impacts your experience of the blessing and the inheritance you already possess! Your knowledge of God’s Word determines your access to what is legally yours! You can own healing and live sick, own provision and live broke, own peace and live anxious; all because you don’t know what you have or how to access it!
4. Grace Replaces Dual Control with Singular, Spirit-Led Freedom!
The reason the dual control of religious and worldly principles is NO LONGER our reality is because Christ provided a superior system: the internal, relational, empowering leadership of the Holy Spirit!
How this applies to you:
— The Holy Spirit living in you means you have everything you need to live a godly and purposeful life! 2 Peter 1:3 declares this! You don’t need the religious rules on the wall anymore; you have the Rule-Giver living inside you! You don’t need the worldly performance standards; you have the Spirit empowering you to do what the Law could never enable!
— Think about the freedom this creates: instead of checking a religious rulebook for every decision, you commune with the indwelling Spirit who gives you wisdom for your specific situation!
— You are free from the pressure to perform because your conduct is now about respecting your Father and representing Him well as His son, not about earning salvation, maintaining approval, or proving your worth! One produces anxiety; the other produces joy and excellence!
— The Holy Spirit is your leader, your guide, and the one who empowers you to do what He leads you to do, even though you (in your flesh) are not good enough for the assignment! He doesn’t just give you religious commands and worldly standards to meet; He gives you internal direction and supernatural power to fulfill what He’s leading you to do! He gives you the desire and the power!
— Stop trying to achieve through self-effort and legalism what can only be fulfilled through grace and the Spirit’s leading! The Spirit produces in you what the Law could only demand from you!
— Your new life is about moving from compliance-based Christianity to communion-based Christianity, where every day is an adventure of hearing the voice of the Father! Instead of waking up to a religious to-do list and worldly performance standards, you wake up to a relationship, conversation, and divine direction! Instead of dual control producing fear and exhaustion, singular freedom produces peace and excitement!
That's enough for today.
Declaration of Faith:
Father, I thank You that I have been delivered from the dual control of religious pressure and worldly systems.
That external control is finished. I now live with a singular focus.
I live by the leadership of the Holy Spirit. I am not focused on things external, like rules; I am focused on the internal leadership of Your Spirit.
The Holy Spirit leads me, He guides me, He directs me, He informs me, He instructs me, and He educates me.
And then more importantly, He empowers me. He empowers me to do what You call me to do for such a time as this.
Dual control is GONE, singular freedom is HERE!
I am Living the Grace Life and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
This is Today’s Word. Apply it and prosper!
