Grace in Galatians (Part 116): God Going from Judge to Father

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.

Setting the Stage:

Here’s one of the most profound shifts that happens when you understand sonship: God goes from being your JUDGE to being your FATHER! This isn’t just a minor adjustment in terminology; this is a complete transformation of how you relate to God every single day of your life!

Under the Law, people approached God as JUDGE! Every violation meant potential punishment. Every failure brought fear of rejection. Every sin meant you were guilty, and the Judge was keeping score! But when you become a son through faith in Jesus, everything changes! The courtroom becomes your family living room! The gavel becomes an embrace! The verdict becomes an adoption certificate!

Paul isn’t just telling us WHAT we are (sons of God); he’s showing us HOW this transformation from Judge to Father happened. It happened when we were baptized into Christ and clothed with Christ. This means that how we relate to God every day changes!

You’re no longer standing before God as a criminal awaiting sentencing. You are clothed with Christ. While it is true that when satan looks at you, he sees sin; when the Father looks at you, He sees His Son!

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. Sonship Means God Is Your Father!

Under the Law, people related to God primarily as JUDGE! But sonship changes the entire dynamic! You now relate to God as FATHER, not as Judge!

How this applies to you:

— Romans 8:15 says you didn’t receive a spirit that makes you fearful slaves; you received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children, and now you call Him “Abba, Father”! That word “Abba” is intimate, like “Daddy” or “Papa“! This is relational, not judicial!

— Under the Law, people approached God with fear and trembling, hoping they’d done enough to avoid punishment. But Hebrews 4:16 says you can now “come BOLDLY to the throne of our gracious God” where you receive mercy and find grace! You don’t come boldly to a Judge; you come boldly to a Father!

— When you mess up, you don’t have to fear that God is going to reject you or kick you out of the family! Your sonship gives you security even in your weaknesses and failures! Why? Because a judge sentences criminals, a father disciplines children because he loves them!

— This changes how you pray! You’re not begging a distant Judge to show you mercy. You’re talking to your Father, who loves you, cares about you, and is personally invested in your success! Prayer becomes conversation, not a courtroom hearing!

— If you know you are a son, you can approach God with your questions, your doubts, your struggles, and your failures without fear of condemnation! He’s your Father, and He’s committed to your growth, not your punishment!

— Every morning when you pray, remember: You’re not standing before a Judge’s bench; you’re sitting at your Father’s table! Pray like you are a son!

2. You Were Baptized INTO Christ, Which Is HOW the Judge Became Your Father.

So how did this Judge-to-Father transformation happen? Paul explains: “You were all baptized into Christ.” This is the divine mechanism! Baptism here isn’t primarily about water; it’s about PLACEMENT! You were placed INTO Christ, and when you’re IN HIM, the Judge who was against you becomes the Father who is FOR you!

How this applies to you:

— Being baptized into Christ means you’re IDENTIFIED with Christ! When God looks at you, He sees you IN JESUS and JESUS in you!

— Colossians 3:3 says, “Your real life is hidden with Christ in God.” You’re not just connected TO Christ; you’re hidden IN Christ! This means the Judge can’t see your guilt anymore; He only sees His Son, and when He sees His Son, He responds as a Father, not as a Judge!

— This is why 2 Timothy 2:13 teaches us that even when we are faithless towards Him, He remains faithful towards us. The text says, “For He cannot deny Himself!” He cannot deny that you are in Him, and He cannot deny what He called you to do! Only a parent thinks that way.

— This is why the Father-Son relationship is permanent! It’s not about you maintaining your innocence through good behavior. The Father accepts you because you’re IN Him!

— Being in Christ means His righteousness covers your guilt, His perfection covers your imperfection, and His relationship with the Father becomes your relationship with the Father!

— Religious Christians think that they have to change God’s mind about them, and they attempt to do so with their performance. But God has already changed your POSITION by placing you IN His Son!

— We must learn to rest in the truth that we are not slaves and we are not servants, WE ARE SONS!

3. You Are Clothed WITH Christ, Which Is WHY the Father Can Relate to You as a Father, Not a Judge.

Now Paul shows us the second key to the Judge-to-Father transformation: “You were all clothed with Christ.” This is WHY the Father doesn’t have to judge you anymore! You’re not standing before Him in your own righteousness (which would bring judgment). You’re standing before Him CLOTHED in Christ’s righteousness, and when the Father sees His Son’s righteousness on you, He responds as a FATHER!

How this applies to you:

— Second Corinthians 5:21 explains this perfectly: God made Jesus, who never sinned, to be the offering for your sin so that you could be MADE RIGHT with God through Christ! The Judge can’t condemn what’s righteous, so when you’re clothed in Christ’s righteousness, the Judge becomes your Father!

— Religious systems keep you in the courtroom by telling you to clean yourself up before approaching God, but grace moves you to the living room BY clothing you with Christ! You don’t come to God in your own goodness (which would fail); you come in Christ’s goodness, and that changes everything!

— Being clothed with Christ means you’re not exposed to judgment anymore! Your sins are covered, your shame is removed, and your standing is secure because you’re wearing the righteousness that makes the Judge respond as a Father!

— The Father doesn’t shift back to Judge-mode when you mess up! Why? Because you’re still clothed in His Son’s righteousness, and that keeps the relationship Father-to-son, not Judge-to-defendant!

— When you understand that you’re clothed with Christ, the Judge-to-Father transformation becomes real in your daily experience! You’re not wondering if you’ll be condemned today. You know you are already accepted because you are clothed with Christ!

4. This Judge-to-Father Transformation Eliminates the Fear That Drove the Law System.

Here’s the final piece of understanding the Judge-to-Father shift: Under the Law, relating to God as Judge created constant FEAR: the fear of punishment, fear of rejection, fear of condemnation! But sonship operates on a completely different system! When God goes from Judge to Father, everything changes! First John 4:18 says, “Perfect love expels all fear.” Judges inspire fear; Fathers inspire love!

How this applies to you:

— The Law system kept you in the courtroom, and courtrooms produce FEAR! “Did I do enough? Will I be found guilty? What’s my sentence?” But the Father’s house produces LOVE! Fear drives the Law; love drives sonship!

— Romans 8:15 specifically says you did NOT receive a spirit that makes you fearful slaves! That spirit of fear belonged to the courtroom, to relating to God as Judge. But under grace, as a son, you’ve received the Spirit of adoption who reminds you that you’re in the Father’s house now, not in the Judge’s courtroom!

— When fear drives you, you obey to avoid condemnation. When love drives you (Father-to-son relationship), you obey because of the relationship! There’s a massive difference!

— 1 John 4:18 also says, “If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” Did you catch that? If you are afraid of God or afraid of coming to Him, it is because you have not fully experienced His love! His love casts out all fear! There is no fear in love!

— This doesn’t mean there are no consequences for wrong choices, but the entire CONTEXT has changed! You’re not trying to avoid the Judge’s gavel; you’re learning to honor your Father! You’re not scared of condemnation; you’re confident in the Father’s love!

— Many Christians are still living in the courtroom mentally: “If I don’t perform well, the Judge will condemn me.” “If I mess up, the Judge will reject me.” But that’s courtroom thinking, not family thinking! The Judge became your Father, and Fathers don’t condemn; they love, discipline, and restore!

— Today, check which room you’re living in! Are you serving God out of fear of the Judge’s verdict, or are you serving God out of love for your Father? One keeps you in bondage to fear; the other sets you free to love! The Judge became your Father, and that changes everything!

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that You are no longer my Judge; You are my Father!

I have moved from the courtroom to the family room, and I will never go back!

I approach You boldly, not as a guilty defendant, but as Your beloved child!

I declare that I have been baptized INTO Christ, and that’s what transformed our relationship from judicial to familial!

I am clothed with Christ’s righteousness, and that’s WHY You relate to me as a Father, not as a Judge!

When You look at me, You don’t see a criminal to condemn; You see Your child to love!

I refuse to be motivated by fear of judgment; I am motivated by love for my Father!

Perfect love has expelled all fear from my life because You are no longer on the bench; You are in my heart!

The Judge became my Father, and that transformation is permanent, secure, and life-changing!

I’m Living the Grace Life as a SON with a FATHER, not a defendant with a Judge, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
