Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.

Key scriptures for this year:

(2 Corinthians 9:8 TPT)

"Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do."

(Galatians 5:4 TPT)

"If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!"

(Romans 6:14 ERV)

"Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God's grace."

(1 Corinthians 15:10 CEV)

"But God treated me with undeserved grace! He made me what I am, and his grace wasn't wasted. I worked much harder than any of the other apostles, although it was really God's grace at work and not me."

Scripture we will study today:

(Galatians 3:24 TPT)

“The Law became our guardian to supervise us and bring us to Christ so that we would be made right with God through faith.”

(Galatians 3:24 NLT)

“Let me put it another way. The Law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith.”

Supporting scriptures:

(Romans 10:4 NLT)

“For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the Law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.”

(Hebrews 10:1 NLT)

“The old system under the Law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship.”

(Romans 8:3-4 NLT)

“The Law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the Law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the Law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.”

(Galatians 4:1-2 NLT)

“Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves an inheritance for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father had. They have to obey their guardians until they reach whatever age their father set.”

Setting the Stage:

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to go from being a SERVANT in the house to being a SON in the house? In the same home, under the same roof, but with completely different status, privileges, and freedom? That’s exactly the transition Paul is describing in Galatians 3:24! He’s showing us the journey from being under the Law’s supervision as servants to walking in the freedom of sonship through faith in Christ!

In today’s verse, Paul introduces a powerful word picture that helps us understand the Law’s true role: GUARDIAN. In the Greek, this is the word “paidagogos” (pronounced pie-dag-o-gos), and it referred to a stern household servant whose job was to supervise, discipline, and escort a child until they came of age. The guardian wasn’t the parent. The guardian wasn’t gentle or nurturing. The guardian was STRICT, and their supervision was TEMPORARY! Once the child matured and the father said it was time, the guardian’s job was OVER!

This is HUGE! The Law was never meant to be your permanent supervisor. But here’s the problem: many Christians are still living under the guardian’s supervision even though faith has arrived and they’ve come of age as sons and daughters of God!

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. The Law Was a Guardian With a Specific Purpose: To Bring You TO Christ, Not to Save You!

Paul says the Law became our guardian “to supervise us and BRING US TO CHRIST.” Notice the direction? The Law’s job was to LEAD you somewhere; specifically, to JESUS! The Law was never the destination; it was the escort that got you there!

How this applies to you:

— The guardian’s job was to make you AWARE of your need for a Savior, not to BE your Savior! Do you get it? The Law was designed to show us that we needed a Savior, but the Law cannot save us. Now that the Law led us to call upon the name of Jesus, and now that we are filled with God’s Spirit and we have His Word, we no longer need the Law.

— Think about a schoolteacher who gives you a test. The test reveals what you know and what you DON’T know, but the test itself doesn’t teach you! The Law was like that test. It showed you where you were falling short, but it couldn’t empower you to do better! Rules cannot make you right; they can only show you where you are either right or wrong.

— Romans 10:4 says, “Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the Law was given.” The Law had a job to do, and Jesus COMPLETED that job! The Law’s purpose was fulfilled when it brought you to the One who could actually save you!

— Many Christians misunderstand the Law’s purpose! They think the Law was given to make them righteous, but that was NEVER its purpose. The Law was given to make you aware of your UNRIGHTEOUSNESS so you would run to Jesus for righteousness!

— The guardian was never meant to be loved or embraced; he was meant to be OUTGROWN! Once you came to Christ, the guardian’s job was finished. You don’t go back and ask the guardian for permission once you’ve come of age!

— Religious systems today still try to use the Law to save people, but that’s not what it was designed for! The Law was designed to bring you to the END of self-effort so you would embrace grace through faith!

— The Law did its job when it brought you to Jesus! You’re not supposed to keep going back to the guardian for approval. You’ve graduated! You’ve come of age! You’re now led by the Spirit, not supervised by the Law!

2. The Guardian Was STRICT but TEMPORARY. His Supervision Had an Expiration Date!

In the ancient world, a paidagogos (guardian) wasn’t warm and fuzzy. He was STRICT! He enforced rules, administered discipline, and made sure the child stayed in line until they reached maturity. But here’s the key: the guardian’s authority was TEMPORARY! Once the child came of age, the father would say, “That’s enough. My child is now mature, and the guardian is no longer needed!” This is the word Paul chose to use to describe the role of the Law.

How this applies to you:

— The Law was strict because it had to be! It couldn’t overlook sin, compromise on standards, or give you a pass when you failed. It was like that stern teacher who marked every answer wrong and never graded on a curve; a teacher who never gave any breaks.

— Paul says the guardian supervised us “UNTIL Christ came.” That little word “until” is critical! It means the guardian’s role had a specific end date. Once Jesus arrived, the need for the guardian was OVER!

— Hebrews 8:13 says, “By calling this covenant ‘new,’ he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.” The Bible calls the Law obsolete and outdated. So, why are so many Christians holding on to it for dear life?

— Galatians 4:1-2 explains this perfectly. A child who inherits their father’s estate is technically the owner of everything, but until they come of age, they’re no better off than a slave because they’re still under the guardian’s supervision!

— While they are under supervision, they have no power, even though they are sons and daughters. However, once the supervision period is over, they can enjoy the full benefits of being a son or daughter and receive the full inheritance. That describes us today, under the New Covenant!

— You moved from SERVANT status to SON status! Same house, same Father, but completely different privileges, freedom, and inheritance rights!

— The guardian’s job was to bring you to maturity, not keep you in immaturity! But religious systems want to keep you under supervision forever. They want you dependent on their rules, their approval, and their oversight for your entire life!

— When you got saved and placed your faith in Jesus, you CAME OF AGE spiritually! You’re not a child under supervision anymore. As you learn to be led by the Holy Spirit, you become a mature son or daughter walking in the freedom of the Spirit!

3. The Guardian Could Reveal Your Need but Could Never Meet Your Need!

The Law could show you that you had a problem, but it couldn’t solve your problem! It could diagnose your sin, but it couldn’t cure it! I have made this point already in this series, but it is worth repeating.

How this applies to you:

— Hebrews 10:1 says the Law was “only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves.” The Law could point to the solution, but it wasn’t the solution!

— The Law revealed the PROBLEM (your sin) but couldn’t provide the SOLUTION (righteousness). Only Jesus could do that! Romans 8:3 says, “The law of Moses was UNABLE to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.” The Law wasn’t defective; we were! And the Law couldn’t fix that! The main problem with the Law is that it is too perfect. The issue was and is with us. We needed saving. Jesus came, and He saved us from both prisons (sin and the Law).

— Many Christians are still trying to use the Law to achieve what only grace can provide! They’re trying to earn righteousness through performance when righteousness is a GIFT received through faith!

— Now that the Law brought us to Jesus, and now that we are Born-Again (filled with God’s Spirit), and we have His Word, our mandate is to walk and live by faith. God is looking for faith from us, not compliance with the Law. Now, what’s amazing is that when we are led by the Holy Spirit, not even thinking about the Law, the Holy Spirit will lead us to live a life that is pleasing in God’s sight! That’s the goal.

4. You’ve Transitioned From Servant to Son, So Stop Living Like You’re Still Under Supervision!

If you’re in Christ, you’ve GRADUATED! You’re no longer under the guardian’s supervision. You’re a mature son or daughter of God, walking in freedom and led by the Holy Spirit. But too many Christians are living like they’re still in elementary school, waiting for the guardian’s approval!

How this applies to you:

— When you placed your faith in Jesus, you moved from being supervised by rules to being led by relationship! You’re not checking a list of dos and don’ts anymore; you’re walking in intimacy with the Father through the Holy Spirit!

— Religious people will try to put you back under the guardian’s supervision! They’ll say, “You need accountability! You need rules! You need someone watching you!” But Paul says once faith has come, the guardian is no longer needed!

— This doesn’t mean you live recklessly or without wisdom! It means you’re empowered FROM THE INSIDE by the Holy Spirit rather than being controlled FROM THE OUTSIDE by a list of rules!

— Many Christians live in constant fear that they’re not doing enough, following enough rules, or measuring up to enough standards. But that’s guardian-thinking! As a mature believer, you’re empowered by grace and led by the Spirit to live righteously from the inside out!

— Stop asking, “What does the Law say I can’t do?” and start asking, “What does the Spirit want to do THROUGH me?” This is a shift from supervision to sonship, from guardian control to being led by the Holy Spirit.

— Here’s my final thought today: You’re not under supervision anymore; you’re under the leadership of the Holy Spirit! You’re not trying to measure up to external rules; you’re being changed by internal grace! This is #TheGraceLife, and this is how we are supposed to live.

That's enough for today.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that the guardian’s job is finished in my life because I’ve come to faith in Jesus!

I refuse to live under supervision when I’ve been called to walk in sonship!

The Law revealed my need, but Jesus MET my need!

I’m no longer a child under strict supervision; I’m a mature son/daughter led by Your Spirit!

I’ve graduated from rules to relationship, from performance to freedom!

I am righteous, but not because I keep the Law. I am righteous because of Jesus!

I refuse to live under supervision when I’ve been called to walk in sonship!

I am not a slave, I am not a servant, I am a SON!

I don’t have to worry about rules, because my singular focus is on being led by Your Spirit. I know that the Spirit of God will never lead me contrary to the Word of God, so my only focus is doing whatever the Holy Spirit leads me to do!

I’m Living the Grace Life, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!

I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

This is Today’s Word. Apply it and prosper!
