Grace in Galatians (Part 108): The Law Revealed Your Need; Grace Met Your Need

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.
As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.
Key scriptures for this year:
(2 Corinthians 9:8 TPT)
"Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do."
(Galatians 5:4 TPT)
"If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!"
(Romans 6:14 ERV)
"Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God's grace."
(1 Corinthians 15:10 CEV)
"But God treated me with undeserved grace! He made me what I am, and his grace wasn't wasted. I worked much harder than any of the other apostles, although it was really God's grace at work and not me."
Scripture we will study today:
(Galatians 3:22 ERV)
“But the Scripture has concluded that all are imprisoned by sin, so that the promise of salvation would be given to those who believe in Jesus Christ and receive the gift of faith.”
(Galatians 3:22 NLT)
“But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ.”
(Galatians 3:22 ERV)
“But this is not what the Scriptures say. They say that the whole world is bound by sin. This was so that the promise would be given through faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe.”
Supporting scriptures:
(Romans 3:19-20 NLT)
“Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God. For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.”
(Romans 3:23 NLT)
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”
(Romans 5:20 NLT)
“God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.”
(Romans 7:7 NLT)
“Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, ‘You must not covet.'”
(Galatians 3:24 NLT)
“Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith.”
Setting the Stage:
Yesterday, we established that the Law has no power to give life and that we must operate in WORD Power, not willpower. Today, we will go a little deeper into the PURPOSE of the Law. Paul said, “The Scripture has concluded that ALL are imprisoned by sin.” The Law that God gave to Israel (the same Law that religious people think will lead them into righteousness) actually made everyone a prisoner of sin. That doesn’t sound like a solution; that sounds like a DIAGNOSIS!
The Law framed the problem, but it could not provide the solution. And that’s precisely the point! The Law was never given to be your solution; it was given to make your diagnosis clear and concrete. Think about it like this: when you go to the doctor because you’re not feeling well, the doctor doesn’t just guess what’s wrong with you. No! The doctor runs tests, takes your temperature, checks your blood pressure, and orders lab work. All of those tests are DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS. They’re not there to HEAL you; they’re there to REVEAL what’s wrong so you can receive the proper treatment!
That’s exactly what the Law does. The Law diagnoses the human condition and concludes that ALL are imprisoned by sin. The Law reveals that we’re spiritually sick, and no amount of human effort can cure us. But here’s the beautiful part: once the Law reveals our need, it points us to the SOLUTION: Jesus Christ! Paul says the promise of salvation is given to those who BELIEVE in Jesus Christ by faith. Not by performance, but by faith.
The Law shows us we’re prisoners. Grace sets us free! I am sure you understand that now, because we are at part 108 of this series. But many religious people don’t. They are trying to live a New Covenant reality with an Old Covenant mentality.
So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.
1. The Law Was Designed to Diagnose Your Condition, Not Cure It.
I told you before that the Law is like an X-ray machine in a hospital. When you break your arm, the X-ray doesn’t heal your arm; it reveals the problem so the doctor knows how to treat you! In the same way, the Law diagnoses humanity’s spiritual condition (we’re ALL imprisoned by sin), but the Law provides no cure! The cure is Jesus Christ and the grace He provides. The Law reveals the problem; grace provides the solution!
How this applies to you:
— Stop trying to use the Law to fix your spiritual condition! The Law was never designed to heal you; it was designed to show you that you NEED healing.
— When the Holy Spirit convicts you of the righteousness you are called into, it is because He is revealing something in your life that needs the power of God’s grace to change it. He is not leading you to be condemned (like the Law did). He is leading you to be convicted of the reality of who Jesus died for you to be, so you can run TO Jesus, to have grace for the cure!
— Religious people often use the Law as a weapon to condemn others, but that’s a misuse of the Law. The Law’s purpose is to bring people to the realization that they need a Savior, not to make them feel hopeless. If you’re using the Law to beat people up, you’re missing the entire point! The person pointing the finger needs just as much grace as the person the finger is pointing at.
— In your own life, when you become aware of areas where you’re falling short, thank God for revealing the issue, and then, by faith, receive the grace to change! In this way, you stop operating under the diagnostic tool and start living in the cure!
— Remember: the Law concluded that ALL are imprisoned by sin. That means no one is exempt! You’re not worse than anyone else, and you’re not better than anyone else. We all needed the same Savior, and we all received the same grace. This levels the playing field and removes religious pride!
— Don’t be like the Pharisees who brought the woman caught in the very act of adultery to Jesus. Their mentality was, “We are right and she is wrong.” After Jesus was done with them, they heard the Gospel and it was, “You are ALL WRONG!”
— The closer you truly get to God, the less you think of yourself and the more gracious you are towards others. Law-minded people are susceptible to pride. Grace-minded people know that they were prisoners to sin, and it is only by the grace of God that they got out of that prison, so they have nothing to boast about!
2. The Law Reveals You’re a Prisoner of Sin, But Grace Declares You’re Free in Christ.
Paul says the Scripture “concluded” or “declared” that all are prisoners of sin. That’s a legal verdict! The Law took the witness stand, examined the evidence, and reached a conclusion: GUILTY. Every human being stands condemned before a holy God based on the Law’s standard. But here’s where grace enters the courtroom! While the Law declares you guilty, grace declares you FREE!
How this applies to you:
— You were BORN a prisoner of sin, but you were BORN AGAIN as a child of God who is free in Christ! Your natural birth placed you in the prison of sin, but your spiritual birth relocated you to the Kingdom of God’s beloved Son.
— When the enemy tries to remind you of your past or accuse you of present failures, remember that the Law already concluded you were a prisoner, but GRACE concluded you are FREE! Satan operates as the “accuser of the brethren,” using the Law to condemn you. But Jesus is your Advocate, using grace to defend and justify you!
— Stop viewing yourself through the lens of the Law (prisoner, guilty, condemned) and start seeing yourself through the lens of grace (free, forgiven, justified). When satan looks at you, he sees sin. When the Father looks at you, He sees the blood of His own Son! That’s grace!
— In practical terms, this means when you mess up, you don’t have to spiral into condemnation. Yes, the Law would say, “You’re still a prisoner of sin.” But grace says, “You’re free in Christ, and this mistake doesn’t change your identity. Receive forgiveness, learn from it, and move forward!”
— The promise of freedom comes through BELIEVING in Jesus Christ, not through ACHIEVING perfect performance. Believe the right message, and you’ll experience the right outcome!
— Too many Christians live like prisoners even though they’ve been set free. They’re still bound by guilt, shame, and condemnation because they’re listening to the Law instead of listening to grace. You have the keys to your cell; Jesus gave them to you when He set you free. Walk out of the prison and live #TheGraceLife!
3. The Promise Comes Through Faith in Jesus Christ, Not Through Keeping the Law.
Paul is crystal clear: “The promise of salvation would be given to those who BELIEVE in Jesus Christ and RECEIVE the gift of faith.” Notice that salvation is a PROMISE given to those who BELIEVE, not a reward given to those who ACHIEVE.
How this applies to you:
— Your relationship with God is not based on your performance under the Law; it’s based on your faith in Jesus Christ! This means on your worst day, you’re just as accepted by God as you are on your best day. Your standing with God is not fluctuating based on your behavior; it’s constant based on your belief!
— In your daily walk with God, remind yourself that you’re living under a promise-based covenant, not a performance-based contract. Contracts say, “If you do this, I’ll do that.” Promises say, “I’ve already done this for you; now receive it by faith.” That’s the difference between religion and relationship!
— The gift of faith itself is something you receive, not something you generate. Even your ability to believe is a gift of grace! So you can’t boast about your faith as if it’s your accomplishment. Everything from salvation to sanctification is by grace through faith, and even the faith you have was a gift (see Romans 12:3).
— When sharing the gospel with others, don’t present it as a list of rules they need to keep or a religious system they need to follow. Present it as a PROMISE from God that they can receive by simply believing in Jesus Christ. Make it about the promise, not the performance!
4. The Law Revealed Your Need; Now Let Grace Meet Your Need in Every Area of Life.
The Law did its job perfectly by revealing that you’re a prisoner of sin and that you need a Savior. But now that you HAVE a Savior, it’s time to let grace meet every need in your life! The diagnostic phase is over. The treatment phase has begun!
How this applies to you:
— In your spiritual life, stop trying to become righteous through self-effort and rule-keeping. You’re ALREADY righteous in Christ by grace through faith! Now let that righteousness work itself out in your daily life as you yield to the Holy Spirit. Grace doesn’t just save you; it transforms you from the inside out!
— In your relationships, the Law would say, “You must love your neighbor,” but it gave you no power to do it consistently. Grace says, “God’s love has been poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit.” So now, God’s love is in you, and it flows through you to others. In other words, God has given you the grace to love with His love, empowering you to love difficult people in ways you never could before!
— In your finances, the Law might make you feel guilty for not giving enough or doing enough, but grace says, “God has already provided everything you need, and as you walk in faith, His provision will manifest in your life.” Financial freedom comes through grace, not through Law-based condemnation! The Holy Spirit will lead you concerning sowing and reaping. So you don’t give because you are afraid of a curse. You give as an act of worship.
— In your family, instead of using the Law to judge and criticize family members for not measuring up, extend grace to them the same way God extended grace to you. When the Law reveals their failures (and it will), point them to the grace that can transform them, just like it transformed you!
— At work, you don’t have to operate under the pressure of the Law saying, “If you do all of these things right, then God will bless you.” Grace says, “God’s favor is on my life and God will cause me to prosper in ways that exceed my performance!” That takes the pressure off you and helps you to enter into God’s rest, where success is concerned.
— When the Law reveals sin in your life (and it will), don’t stay stuck in the diagnosis. Immediately move to the treatment: confess it, receive forgiveness, forgive yourself, and let grace cleanse you and empower you to walk in victory. The Law’s job is to reveal; grace’s job is to heal. Let both do their job, but don’t confuse the two!
— Here’s the bottom line: The Law concluded you’re a prisoner. Grace declares you’re free. The Law revealed your need. Grace met your need. Enter into this day (and every day) as a free, forgiven, equipped, enabled, and empowered child of the Most High God! There is grace on your life that God planned to give you before the world began! Now go walk in it!
That's enough for today.
Declaration of Faith:
Father, I thank You that while the Law made me a prisoner to sin, Jesus set me free!
The Law revealed my need, but grace has met my need in every area of my life!
I don’t earn Your promises through performance; I receive them through faith in Jesus!
I am righteous, forgiven, justified, and free; not because of what I did, but because of what Jesus did!
I enter into this day as a free, forgiven, equipped, enabled, and empowered child of the Most High God!
I am Living the Grace Life, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
This is Today’s Word. Apply it and prosper!
