Grace in Galatians (Part 106): The Law Requires, But Grace Delivers

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Galatians.

“Does this mean that the law is against God’s promises? Of course not! The law was never God’s way of giving new life to people. If it were, then we could be made right with God by following the law.”

Setting the Stage:

As we study what the Apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Galatia, the teaching has powerful implications for us today. Paul said something that would have shocked his Jewish audience: “If the law had the POWER to give us life, then righteousness would have come by keeping the Law.” The word “if” is crucial here. Paul is saying the Law does NOT have the power to give life! This was revolutionary teaching because the Jewish people believed the Law was their path to life and righteousness. They thought that by keeping the commandments, they would earn God’s favor and blessing.

But Paul is declaring something radical: the Law is powerless to produce life! It can show you what’s right and wrong. It can reveal sin. It can establish God’s standards. But it CANNOT give you the spiritual life you need to fulfill those standards! Think about it: the Law can tell you not to lie, steal, or commit adultery, but it can’t give you the power to live free from those sins. The Law can command you to love God with all your heart, but it can’t create that love in your heart!

This is why so many religious people are frustrated, burned out, and defeated. They’re trying to live by the Law, and they think it will give them life. But it was never designed to do so. It was designed to produce death (meaning that it proved to mankind that we deserved punishment for our sins). The Law was designed to reveal sin and our need for a Savior, but only grace through Jesus Christ has the power to give us the spiritual life we desperately need!

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. The Law Can Tell You What to Do, But It Can’t Give You the Power to Do It.

The Law is like a coach yelling instructions from the sidelines, but never giving you the strength or skill to execute the play! It can point to the standard, but it can’t empower you to reach the standard. This is the fundamental weakness of the Law that Paul is exposing. God gave the Law knowing full well that humanity couldn’t keep it, and that was the point! The Law was designed to show us our desperate need for a life-giving Savior!

How this applies to you:

— Stop being frustrated with yourself for not being able to keep religious rules perfectly. The Law was never meant to empower you; it was meant to expose your need for the One who does! When you fail at keeping standards, that’s not a sign you need to try harder; it’s a sign you need more grace!

— Let me say it this way: religious obligation without spiritual empowerment always leads to burnout. If your Christian life feels like an exhausting treadmill of duties, demands, and disciplines, you’re living under Law-based thinking rather than grace-based living. Grace gives you the power to do what the Law only demands!

— The Ten Commandments are good and holy, but they can’t make you good and holy! They reveal God’s character, but they can’t reproduce that character in you. Only the indwelling Holy Spirit can transform you from the inside out, and He operates by grace, not by Law!

— When you read the Old Testament, understand that every command God gave was an invitation to recognize how flawed our humanity is, so that we can cry out for divinity! 

— Stop using Bible verses as weapons of condemnation against yourself or others. The Word of God is spirit and life, but when you use it as a Law-based tool to condemn, you strip it of its life-giving power. The Word is meant to build you up in grace, not tear you down with guilt!

— If you are a Law-minded person and you are a leader (at work or at home), you must be careful not to focus so much on rules that you don’t build up the people you are attempting to lead. Rules can’t make you right. Rules can only show you when you are wrong. At work, at home, and even in church, if you are a leader, you should be an example and extender of grace! Grace speaks life, identity, and purpose, without tearing people down for simply being flawed. God looks past your faults, flaws, and failures every day as He attempts to use you for His glory. This is the type of leadership #TheGraceLife enables.

2. Religion Focuses on External Behavior; Grace Produces Internal Change.

The Law can only address external behavior. It can say, “Don’t do this,” or “Do that,” but it can’t change your heart! You can modify your behavior temporarily through willpower, fear, or discipline, but that’s not true transformation. True transformation happens from the inside out, and only grace has the power to change your heart, renew your mind, and produce lasting fruit in and from your life!

How this applies to you:

— Stop measuring your spiritual maturity by how well you’re controlling your behavior. Behavior modification is not the same as heart transformation! You can look good on the outside while dying on the inside. 

— There are Christians who show up at every church service and activity, with the right clothes on their bodies and they right smiles on their faces, but in their inner man, they have not been changed. You can put up a facade all you want, but God looks at your heart.

— When you struggle with the same sin repeatedly, don’t just try harder to stop; ask God to transform your heart through His grace. The Law says, “Stop sinning!” But grace says, “You’re righteous in Christ, and His power enables you to live free!” One produces guilt; the other taps into the power of the Holy Spirit to change!

— The Pharisees were experts at external compliance while their hearts were far from God. They followed every rule, observed every regulation, and kept every tradition, but Jesus said they were like whitewashed tombs: clean on the outside, dead on the inside. Don’t fall into that trap! Pursue true heart transformation through the power of God’s grace, and your outward life will reflect your inward reality!

— In your relationships, focus on what’s happening in people’s hearts, not just their behavior. When someone’s behavior is not lining up, if you attack the behavior with law and condemnation, you will create resentment and distance! But if you address the heart issue with grace and compassion, you can create a strong bond with the person, and God will use you to help that person realize lasting change. 

— Grace doesn’t ignore sin; it transforms the sinner! When you encounter sin in your life, don’t run from God in shame; run to Him in faith! His grace doesn’t excuse your behavior; it empowers you to overcome it. Remember, the Holy Spirit does not come to condemn you for sin. He comes to convict you of your righteousness. He reminds you of who you are in Christ!

— Many Christians try to fix themselves with New Year’s resolutions, self-help strategies, and willpower. But these are all Law-based approaches that produce temporary results (at best). But if you meditate and medicate on God’s Word, and you spend time with God’s Spirit, the grace of God will transform you in ways your willpower never could!

— True spiritual life flows from abiding in Christ, not from adhering to rules. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.” Stay connected to the life source (Jesus), and fruit will naturally grow. Disconnect from the Vine to focus on rule-keeping, and you’ll produce nothing but dead religion!

3. Grace Gives You the Life the Law Demands But Cannot Produce.

Grace actually fulfills what the Law required! The Law said, “Be holy,” but couldn’t make you holy. Grace says, “You are holy in Christ,” and empowers you to live accordingly! 

How this applies to you:

— You don’t have to work to become what grace has already made you. You ARE righteous, holy, and blameless in Christ right now, not after years of spiritual discipline! Your job is to believe it and walk in it by faith. When you embrace your grace-given identity, your behavior will naturally align!

— Every command in the New Testament is an invitation to live from your new nature, not an obligation to create your new nature. When Paul says “walk in love” or “live in peace,” he’s not giving you a Law-based command; he’s reminding you to live from the love and peace that grace has already placed inside you!

— The fruit of the Spirit is not something you manufacture through effort; it’s something grace produces in you as you abide in Christ. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control flow from your connection to Jesus, not from your determination to be better!

— In your calling and purpose, stop waiting until you feel qualified to launch out into your destiny. Grace has already equipped you with everything you need for the assignment God gave you! Step out in faith, knowing that His grace is sufficient for every challenge you’ll face. The Law says, “Get ready first.” Grace says, “Go now, and I’ll be with you!“

— The Law creates pressure to perform. Grace creates peace to receive. The Law produces anxiety. Grace produces rest. The Law leads to burnout. Grace leads to breakthrough!

4. Life in Christ Is Not About What You Do for God; It’s About What God Does in and Through You.

This is the core difference between Law and grace! The Law puts the burden on you: “Do this, don’t do that, be better, try harder!” Grace puts the focus on God: “I will give you life, I will transform you, I will work in and through you!” Under the Law, the question is always, “Am I doing enough?” Under grace, the declaration is always, “God’s grace is more than enough!”

How this applies to you:

— Your Christian life is not about your ability to live for God; it’s about God’s ability to live through you! Stop taking the pressure to produce spiritual results through your own strength. Yield to the Holy Spirit, and let Him produce the fruit. You’re the branch; He’s the Vine. Branches don’t strain to produce fruit; they simply stay connected to the life source!

— When you pray, you’re not trying to convince God to help you; you’re receiving the help He’s already provided through grace! Prayer is not about begging or bargaining; it’s about believing and receiving. 

— In your daily challenges, stop saying, “I have to figure this out on my own.” Instead, say, “God’s grace is at work in me right now, giving me wisdom, strength, and favor!” This shift in perspective changes everything. You move from anxiety to assurance, from fear to faith!

— Ministry is not about what you can do for God; it’s about what God can do through you when you yield to His grace. The most effective ministers are not the most talented or educated; they’re the ones who have learned to operate in God’s grace rather than their own ability. Paul said it best: “I worked harder, but it was not me. It was really God’s grace at work through me!“

— Your success in life is not determined by how hard you work, how smart you are, or how many advantages you have. Your success is determined by how much grace you receive and how you steward it by faith! Grace takes ordinary people and does extraordinary things through them when they believe!

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that the Law has no power to give me life, but Your grace does!

I stop trying to produce spiritual life through rules and regulations!

I receive the life-giving power of grace that changes me from the inside out!

The Law could only demand righteousness, but grace makes me righteous in Christ!

I am not living by my ability to perform; I’m living by Your ability to empower!

I abide in You and You abide in me. As a result, my life produces fruit naturally!

Every fruit, every victory, every blessing comes from grace, not from my effort!

I rest in the finished work of Jesus and receive what grace has already provided!

I am Living the Grace Life, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
