Discovering Destiny (Part 4) – A Book In Heaven With Your Name On It

Today, we continue our focus on THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, as we learn to maintain our posture of faith after God has revealed His plans for our future.

So far in our “Discovering Destiny” series, we learned that you discover your destiny, that God planned you before time began, and that He made a masterpiece when He made you. Today, we open the book of your life and discover that your days were written before you ever lived one of them.

Setting the Stage:

There is a book in heaven, and it has your name on it. I am not being poetic or hyperbolic. David said it plainly in Psalm 139. He said that before he had ever seen the light of day, the number of his days was already recorded in God’s book. Think about that. There is a volume in heaven, written in God’s own hand, with your name on the cover, and every chapter, every season, and every day of your life was written on its pages before you lived a single one of them.

That changes everything about how you face today. You are not writing your life on a blank page. You are living a story God already authored. Your days are not random squares on a calendar. They are pages in a book the Author finished before you were born. And once you know there is a book in heaven with your name on it, you can stop living afraid of what the next page holds. Let me show you what is written in that book.

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. David Discovered His Life Was Already In God’s Book.

David said something extremely significant in Psalm 139:16. Before he had ever seen the light of day, the number of his days was already recorded in God’s book. So let me say it the way I always say it: there is a book in heaven with your name on it. It was written before you took your first breath, and every day you have ever lived was a page God wrote in advance. That means today is not a blank square you have to fill on your own. Today is a page the Author wrote before time, knowing exactly what He was writing, and also based on His foreknowledge of what you would decide and do. 

How this applies to you:

— Psalm 139:16 TPT says, “Before I’d ever seen the light of day, the number of days you planned for me were already recorded in your book.” There is a book in heaven with your name on it, and it was written before you drew your first breath.

— Jesus did the very same thing. In Luke 4, He stood up in the synagogue, unrolled the scroll to Isaiah 61, read the words that were written about Himself, and said, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus found Himself in the book. Your life is not recorded in the Bible the way His was, but it is recorded in heaven, and just as He discovered who He was in the book, you discover who you are as you walk with God.

— You are not making up your life as you go. You are living a story the Author finished before you arrived. That is what discovery is.

— The book exists, it has your name on it, and God is the One who wrote it.

— This is why anxiety about the future makes no sense for a believer. You cannot be ambushed by a page the Author already wrote. Nothing in your story catches God off guard, because He wrote the next chapter before you got to it.

— Stop trying to author a book God already finished before you were born. Shift your focus to discovering what he already planned. 

— When I look back over my life, I can see God’s handwriting on pages I did not understand while I was living them. The hard chapters were not mistakes. They were written on purpose, and they were setting up the next chapters.

2. The Book Already Names Your Time And Place.

Watch what Paul preached in Acts 17:26. God made every person, and He decided exactly when and where they would live. Read that slowly. God did not only write WHO you would be in the book. He wrote WHEN you would live and WHERE you would be. You were not born in the wrong century or dropped in the wrong city. The era you live in, the family you were born into, and the place you call home were all written on the page on purpose, as an appointment and not an accident. That is why Mordecai told Esther she was positioned “for such a time as this.”

How this applies to you:

— Acts 17:26 ERV says God “decided exactly when and where they would live.” The book does not only name who you are. It names when you would live and where you would stand, and both are in there on purpose.

— You were not born in the wrong century or dropped in the wrong place. God knew I would be born in East New York, Brooklyn, in 1972. While my neighborhood was literally documented as the murder capital of the murder capital of the United States during that time, God deployed me to that place at that time for a divine purpose. 

— The times are difficult, but you were not assigned to an easier era. God looked across all of history and wrote you into HERE, NOW, on purpose. You are God’s answer to this moment, not a victim of it.

— Esther 4:14 ERV asks, “who knows, maybe you have been chosen… for just such a time as this.” The same God who wrote Esther into her moment wrote you into yours. Your place in this generation is part of your assignment.

— Where you are right now is not a mistake; it is a page in God’s book.

— Stop wishing you lived in a different time or came from a different place. The Author wrote your setting (time and location) on purpose. The when and the where are part of the why, and God does not waste a single detail of where He plants you.

— I will make it personal for a moment and share with you that I grew up with somewhat of a survivor’s remorse. When I was five months old, my mom took me to the Dominican Republic to wait on her papers (immigration papers). We didn’t come back until I was three years old. Every summer, I was in the Dominican Republic, and my cousins were telling me that I was lucky and rich because I was born in New York. I was the first of my family to be so. They kept telling me that I had so many opportunities and way more than they had. I remember feeling remorseful over the fact that I didn’t do anything to earn that. I could not dictate where I was born or when I was born. So in many ways, what I’m teaching today is something I’ve given some significant thought to. I am the first of my family born in this country, and I wouldn’t be who I am today had I been born in the Dominican Republic. God knew the time and the location where I would be born, and he deployed me to this planet for such a time as this. The same can be said of you. 

3. Every Day You Live Is A Page He Already Wrote.

If your name is on a book in heaven, then every day you live is a page in that book. That means your days are not endless, and they are not random. They are purposeful and numbered. Job said God determined the number of our days and set limits nothing can change. David said our times are in God’s hands. That is not a morbid thought. It is a freeing one. Because if God numbered your pages, then every single one of them matters to Him. There are no throwaway days in a book God wrote.

How this applies to you:

— Job 14:5 ERV says, “You have decided how long we will live. You have set the limits.” The pages of your book are numbered, which means every one of them is valuable. You do not waste what you know is counted (limited).

— Psalm 31:15 AMPC says, “My times are in Your hands.” Your timeline is not controlled by your enemies, your circumstances, or your own anxiety. It is held in the hands of the Author.

— When you get a revelation of how every day of your life matters to God, and you’re not going to be on this planet for long, you live with a greater sense of purpose, making the most of the short time God has given you on this planet.

— Because your days are numbered, you should stop wasting them on worry and comparison. Stop worrying about other people’s stories. Live your own pages (to the fullest) today and every day.

— The story of our lives is lived out in times and seasons, levels and stages. When you go through a period that seemed like a “filler” part of your story, it wasn’t really a filler season. It was actually a setup for the next one. 

— If we are honest, we will acknowledge that some seasons are more exciting than others in our lives, but looking back, one day you will realize that God was writing important chapters in seasons we (at the time) thought were wasted. 

— Nothing is wasted in God’s plan. The day you realize this is the day you will start living with a greater sense of purpose and focus. 

4. God Already Knows The End, So Keep Moving Toward It.

The last page (in God’s book of your life) is already written, and your ending is secure. But here is what that means for how you live TODAY. If God already knows the end, then your assignment is not to figure out the ending. It is to keep moving toward it. Jeremiah 29:11 says God’s plans give you an expected end. He has a destination already in mind, and every day is a page that should move you closer to it. You are not standing still, and you are not going in circles. You are moving, and every day you walk with God should take you incrementally closer to God’s overall expected end for your life.

How this applies to you:

— Jeremiah 29:11 KJV says God’s plans are to give you “an expected end.” God is not hoping your life works out. He has a destination already in mind, and He is moving you toward it one page at a time.

— If God already knows the end, your only job today is to keep moving toward it.

— The book is already written, but you still have to live it one page at a time. Philippians 1:6 TPT says God “will faithfully continue the process of maturing you until the unveiling of your union with Jesus Christ!” The end is set, and the process is ongoing, so keep walking it out.

— Do not measure your whole life by one page. Measure it by the direction you are heading. As long as today takes you one step closer to what God already recorded, you are right on schedule, even when it does not feel like it.

— When you live your life with a sense of purpose, you know that a hard chapter is not the last chapter. Understanding this helps you embrace the grace to keep going. 

— So stop living afraid of the ending and start living toward it. The last page already says you win, so walk into today on purpose, knowing every day you walk with God moves you incrementally closer to the expected end already written in your book. It’s already done!

I am not authoring my life. I am discovering the one You wrote!

You wrote the exact time and place I would live into my book!

I am not a historical accident. I am a divine appointment!

I was born for such a time as this!

Every day I live is a page You already wrote, so not one is wasted!

My times are in Your hands, not in the hands of my enemies!

You already wrote my last page, and it ends in victory!

This is THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
