Discovering Destiny (Part 33): Prayers for the School Year & The Battle You Feared Is Already Won

Today, we continue our focus on THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, as we learn to maintain our posture of faith after God has revealed His plans for our future.

Last week, Isabella and I were away with our church family for the Victory Family Conference Cruise. Today we pick our series back up right where we left off. When we last saw Jacob, he was limping away from Peniel with a new name. Today, he looks up and sees the one thing he has been dreading for 20 years: Esau, coming toward him with 400 men.

Today’s message is shorter than usual, and that is on purpose. Every year, when students head back to school, I share prayers and declarations of faith for the school year. This year we will do that FIRST, and then I will share two points from Jacob’s story. If you have school-aged children, this is for you. If you do not, please pass it on to somebody who does.

Prayers and Declarations for the School Year:

Let’s cover our students, parents, teachers, and schools. I wrote these fresh this year because of what we have been learning about grace. Under grace, we do not beg God to do something. We pray FROM victory, not FOR victory. Jesus already disarmed the powers of darkness, so no spell, no hex, no vex, no curse, and no act of witchcraft has any authority over a child of God. Our job is to enforce, by faith, what Jesus already finished.

Download them and print them. Put one on the refrigerator, tape one inside a locker, and tuck one in a backpack. Then speak them out loud all school year long.

Before the declarations, here are the scriptures these prayers stand on. Meditate on them, and go through them with your children:

Declaration of Faith for Students to Declare as they go to School:

Father, before I ever walked into a classroom, You wrote my story. I do not go to school to become somebody. I go to school to discover the somebody You already made me. Your grace is on my life. Your plans for me were finished before I was born. This school year is one more chapter of me discovering what You already wrote.

You are the source of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, and You give them to me freely. The Holy Spirit is my Helper and my best Teacher. When I read, I understand. When I study, it sticks. When I sit in class, I am focused, I process what I am taught, and I retain it. When it is time for a quiz, an exam, or a big test, I recall everything I need, right when I need it. Like Daniel, I operate in wisdom beyond my years.

I do my work with my whole heart, like I am doing it for You. I turn my assignments in on time, and I do them well. I ask questions when I do not understand, because wisdom belongs to those who ask for it. An excellent spirit is in me, like Daniel, so I do not settle for average in my grades, my effort, or my attitude. Favor surrounds me like a shield. I have favor with my teachers, favor with my classmates, and favor everywhere I go, because the God of favor lives in me and goes before me daily.

I am the light in my school. I do not follow the crowd, but the crowd is better because I am in it. I am kind, I am respectful, and I make the people around me better. The Bible teaches that wisdom and foolishness can be transferred by association. The Bible also teaches that bad company can corrupt good character. So you give me the wisdom to connect with the right people and to stay away from the wrong ones. This year, not only do I grow academically, but I also grow in wisdom socially. I’m around the right people, I hear the right things, and I become the right person.

I am loved, I am protected, and I walk in peace. Your angels go with me everywhere I go. You did not give me a spirit of fear. You gave me power, love, and a sound mind. When I look in the mirror, I love and like who I see. GREATER IS COMING FOR ME! I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Declaration of Faith for Parents to Declare as their Children go to School:

Father, I do not release my children into this school year with fear. I release them with faith. You planned my children before the foundation of the world. You wrote the days of their lives in Your book. No person and no power of darkness can cancel what You already wrote. I do not pray for their protection, hoping You will act. I declare their protection because Jesus already acted.

The Blood of Jesus covers my children: their minds, their bodies, their friendships, their classrooms, and every bus, hallway, and field they set foot on. Your Word says there is no sorcery against Jacob and no divination against Israel. So I declare that every spell, every hex, every vex, every word curse, every voodoo ritual, and every act of witchcraft aimed at my children fall to the ground powerless. Every assignment released against them by witches, warlocks, or any agent of satan is canceled right now, in the name of Jesus. What the enemy plans in secret, You expose and nullify in the open.

Grace is on their minds. My children are sharp, focused, and quick to understand. They comprehend, process, and retain everything that relates to their education. They walk in favor with their teachers and favor with their classmates. They are drawn to right friendships and repelled by wrong ones, in person and online. The gifts You placed in them before birth are surfacing this year.

My children know they are loved by You and by me. They believe what You believe about them. They are bold, confident, kind, and respectful. This school year is not something my children just get through. It is a year You prepared for them in advance, full of things You planned for them to discover. GREATER IS COMING FOR MY CHILDREN! I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Declaration of Faith for Teachers, Administrators, and School Staff:

Father, I thank You for every teacher, administrator, counselor, coach, nurse, cafeteria worker, custodian, and bus driver serving our schools this year. Teaching is not just a job. It is an assignment. I declare that everyone You assigned to a school this year has the grace to complete that assignment.

Grace makes them sufficient. Our teachers teach with wisdom, patience, and creativity that come from above. They see the gold in every student, including the ones who are hardest to reach. Our principals and administrators lead with Daniel-level wisdom. Every decision they make protects students, supports teachers, and honors You. Our counselors have supernatural discernment to see what is really going on in a child’s heart. Our bus drivers are alert and covered on every route.

Our educators are protected. The Blood of Jesus covers them in every classroom, every office, and every hallway. No weapon formed against them prospers. No scheme of darkness aimed at their schools, their students, or their minds succeeds. Favor surrounds them like a shield, and their strength is renewed day after day.

Our educators do not finish this year burned out. They finish it built up. They teach, lead, and serve with joy and not weariness, with peace and not fear, knowing their labor is not in vain. This is their best year yet! I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Prayer for our Schools for this School Year:

Father, we do not come to You begging. Jesus already disarmed every spiritual ruler and authority and made a public spectacle of them at the cross. So we pray from victory, in the authority of the name of Jesus, over every school on this planet. We apply the Blood of Jesus to every campus. We station Your angels at every gate, every door, every hallway, and every classroom, all school year long.

We speak to every threat of violence right now. Every plan for a school shooting, every weapon, every act of bullying, every drug, and every predator targeting a campus: we command those plans to be exposed and stopped before they start. Father, You reveal deep and secret things. So we ask You to drag every hidden plan of harm into the light long before it can be carried out. We thank You that no weapon formed against our schools shall prosper.

Now we deal with the powers of darkness head-on, because Your Word says there is no sorcery against Jacob and no divination against Israel. Every spell, every hex, every vex, every curse, every voodoo ritual, and every work of witchcraft released against our students, our teachers, and our staff falls to the ground powerless, right now. Every assignment issued by witches, warlocks, and every agent of satan against a school is canceled by the Blood of Jesus. A curse without cause cannot land. Our schools are covered, and the occult has no authority on any campus where our faith is standing guard.

And now that we have prayed for your hedge of protection over every facility, Father, we ask You to FILL what You have protected. Let Your presence be tangible in classrooms, cafeterias, gyms, and buses. Let students encounter You this year and discover the gifts You planned for them before they were born. Give teachers grace to teach, administrators grace to lead, and parents grace to stay engaged. Our schools are covered, our children come home safe, and this school year is blessed from the first bell to the last. We pray this by faith, from victory, in Jesus’ name, Amen!

Setting the Stage:

The sun came up on a different man. Jacob left Peniel with a limp, a new name, and a face-to-face history with God. But the new name did not erase the old problem. The moment he lifted his eyes, there was Esau on the horizon with 400 men. This is the brother he cheated out of a birthright. This is the brother who swore to kill him. This is the reason he ran 20 years ago, and the reason he had been rehearsing this reunion in his head ever since.

Watch what the changed man does. He arranges his family, and then Genesis 33:3 says, “Then Jacob went on ahead.” The man who spent his whole life hiding behind schemes, goat skins, gifts, and other people put himself at the front of the line. He limped toward his greatest fear, bowing seven times as he went.

Then came the verse nobody saw coming. “Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. And they both wept.” No sword and no revenge. 20 years of dread died in one embrace. While Jacob was wrestling at Peniel, God was working on Esau. The battle Jacob feared the most was already won before he ever got there.

So, what does this mean for you today? Two things.

1. Changed People Walk Toward What They Used To Run From.

Jacob had been a runner his entire life. He ran from Esau, he ran from Laban, and he ran from himself. But after one night with God, Genesis 33:3 says he “went on ahead.” He put himself between his family and the danger, and he limped straight toward the man he feared. The encounter did not just change his name. It changed his direction.

How this applies to you:

— A real encounter with God will give you the courage to face what you have been avoiding.

— Jacob did not face Esau because the fear was gone. He faced Esau because the running was gone. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the power that comes from being so settled in God that you can face what you need to face despite fear.

— Peniel came before the reunion because God deals with you in private before He restores you in public.

— In God’s Kingdom, private processing precedes public exposure.

— Jacob went ahead limping. You do not have to be at full strength to face what God told you to face, but you do have to be leaning on Him.

— You cannot walk into your destiny while you are still running from your history. At some point, you have to face it.

— Some of you have a conversation, a relationship, or a situation you have been avoiding for years. This is THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, and some things are only discovered on the other side of that confrontation.

— God will not promote the version of you that is still hiding.

— Jacob bowed seven times on the way in. Humility is not weakness. It is the posture of a man who has already been emptied of himself before God.

— If God gave you a new name, stop retracing the old man’s steps. Act like the person God has called you to be, even if you have to do it by faith.

— Ask yourself one question: What am I still running from? Whatever the answer is, that is the very place God wants to give you your next victory.

— In this YEAR OF DISCOVERY, you must go after what God hid FOR you, not FROM you. Kings search out a matter. People who run from their destiny never discover anything. Stop running. Look up, look within, and search. You will be amazed by what you discover.

2. God Finished The Fight Before You Got There.

Jacob prepared for war, and God had already prepared peace. He divided his camp, he staged waves of gifts, and he rehearsed his apology. Then Esau ran to him. All that strategy, and the battle was already over. Proverbs 16:7 NKJV says, “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” While Jacob was holding on to God at Peniel, God was softening a heart on the other side of the river.

How this applies to you:

— Your real battle is settled in the secret place, long before you ever face the person.

— Jacob wrestled with God at night and reconciled with Esau in the morning. Get it right with God first, and watch what He does with everything else.

— God can change a heart you have no access to.

— Esau nursed that grudge for 20 years, and Jacob never got the chance to explain himself. God dissolved all of it before either brother said a word.

— Stop rehearsing the confrontation, because God is already ahead of you.

— The 400 men Jacob feared showed up as an escort, not an army. What you thought was coming against you may be coming to receive you.

— Esau looked at Jacob and saw a different man, and Jacob said seeing his brother’s face was “like seeing the face of God.” When God changes you, even your hardest relationships feel the difference.

— Romans 8:31 NLT asks, “If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” and Esau’s 400 men just answered the question.

— Jacob still offered the gift, but he no longer needed it to buy favor. He told Esau, “God has dealt graciously with me, and I have enough.” The manipulator had become a man at rest. He finally had peace.

— Whatever meeting or moment you are dreading, pray the promise, hold on to God, and walk toward it, because the battle you feared is already won.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that You are a God who goes before me!

I walk toward what I used to run from!

I face my fears with the courage You give me!

You deal with me in private before You restore me in public!

While I am praying, You deal with me, and You deal with the people who have to deal with me!

My battles are settled in my prayer closet, long before I ever meet anyone face to face!

If You are for me, You are more than the whole world against me!

That same protection and strength covers my children, their teachers, and their schools!

You go before me and set everything up, so when I get there, I experience Your best!

Thank You for blessing this school year, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
