Discovering Destiny (Part 15): When God Leads You To A Dead End

Today, we continue our focus on THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, as we learn to maintain our posture of faith after God has revealed His plans for our future.

Yesterday, in our “Discovering Destiny” series, we watched God pick the route for a free people. He bypassed the short road, chose the long desert road on purpose, and put a cloud out front by day and a column of fire by night. We learned that you cannot be lost while you are following God, and that the wilderness itself is part of the plan. Today we find out where that cloud led them next, because on day two of their freedom, the God who was leading them walked them straight into a dead end. Water in front. An army behind. No way out that they could see. And what God did there will change the way you read the wall in front of you.

Exodus 14:13 ERV“Don’t be afraid! Don’t run away! Stand where you are and watch the Lord save you today. You will never see these Egyptians again.”

Setting the Stage:

They walked out of Egypt free, and with riches, following a cloud by day and fire by night. Then God gave Moses a strange order. Turn the people around, go back, and camp with your back to the sea. Any general could see the problem. That position boxes you in. Water on one side, open desert on the other, and the most powerful army on earth free to close the gap. God even said Pharaoh would look at them and think, “They are lost.”

But they were not lost. They were exactly where God told them to be. The cloud that led them out had now led them to a dead end, and the dead end was not a mistake. It was an appointment. So the question was never whether God knew where they were. The question was what God was about to do.

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. Sometimes, God Will Lead You Right Into A Dead End.

Watch how they got here, because it matters. They did not wander off and get stuck. They followed the cloud, and the cloud parked them at the water. Yesterday we said you cannot be lost while you are following God. Well, they followed God into what looked like a trap. God tells Moses in Exodus 14:2 to go back and camp between Migdol and the sea, and in Exodus 14:3 God says Pharaoh will think they are lost. From the ground, it looked like poor navigation. From heaven it was bait. God parked His people at a dead end on purpose.

How this applies to you:

— Exodus 14:2 ERV says, “Tell them to spend the night between Migdol and the Red Sea.” God did not lead them around the dead end. He led them right to it.

— Exodus 14:3 ERV says, “Pharaoh will think that the Israelites are lost.” What looked like a wrong turn to everyone watching was a trap being set, and it was set for Pharaoh, not for them.

— The same cloud that led them out of Egypt is the cloud that led them into the corner. God’s leading does not always lead somewhere easy.

— What looks like a dead end on this planet is not always a dead end in God’s plan.

— Yesterday God chose the long road to keep them out of a fight they were not ready for. Today He walks them right into a fight. God was not being inconsistent. He was setting up a scene He was going to finish, and He needed them in a spot where only He could get the credit. This is the principle of Maximum Glory I talk about all the time. Many times, God leads us into a situation where He gets all the glory, because the situation is so bad that no human can take the credit 

— Where God leads, He feeds; where He guides, God provides. This is true, even when where He guides makes no sense to you.

— If you are following God and you have hit a wall, do not assume you took a wrong turn. Some walls are divine appointments. God knows exactly where He has parked you, and He parked you there for a reason.

— Remember, He knew they were not ready to fight. So, in this case, He would do the fighting FOR them. We serve a God who sometimes gives us the grace to fight, and other times manifests grace in a way that we don’t have to fight at all. We can stand still and watch God do what He does. 

2. A Dead End Will Show You What Is Still In Your Heart.

Now watch the reaction, because this is where it gets honest. The army shows up, and Exodus 14:10 says they were terrified and cried out. Then the old language comes pouring out. “Were there no graves in Egypt? Did you bring us out here to die? It would have been better to stay and be slaves.” Yesterday we said it takes one night to get Israel out of Egypt, but an entire wilderness journey to get Egypt out of Israel. Here is the proof. Two days free, and the slave is still talking. 

How this applies to you:

— The dead end did not create that mindset. It exposed it. Deuteronomy 8:2 says God led them through the desert to know what was in their heart. Pressure is a revealer.

— Exodus 14:11 ERV records them asking, “Did you bring us out here in the desert to die?” Two days of freedom, and they were already romanticizing about their chains. Pressure has a way of making old bondage look good, even though, deep down inside, you know it never was.

— A dead end does not put anything in you. It pulls out what was already there.

— They said it would have been better to serve the Egyptians. Their bodies left Egypt at midnight as free men and women, but their mindset was still bound. Freedom is an event. Being free is a process. The same things happened at salvation. You are born again in a moment, but it then takes you a lifetime to fully embrace that reality. 

— What comes out of you under pressure shows you what still needs to die in the desert.

— Deuteronomy 8:2 says the wilderness was so God could “know what is in your heart.” The dead end was not punishment. It was a heart exam. This teaches us that sometimes God allows us to endure pressure-filled situations to expose what is in our heart. 

— But the good news is that God does not expose to condemn. He exposes to heal.

— Do not be discouraged when a hard place exposes something ugly in you. God is not surprised, and He is not standing over you with condemnation. He is showing you what He is getting ready to heal.

3. Stand Still And Let God Do The Fighting.

In the middle of all that panic, Moses opens his mouth, and what he says is the whole grace message delivered on a battlefield. Exodus 14:13-14. He gives them four commands, and three of them are things NOT to do. Do not be afraid. Do not run. Stand where you are. And then watch. He does not hand them swords and a strategy. He hands them stillness and a promise: “The Lord will do the fighting for you.” 

How this applies to you:

— Exodus 14:13 ERV says, “Don’t be afraid! Don’t run away! Stand where you are and watch the Lord save you today.” Notice most of the instruction is about what to stop doing.

— For a nation of slaves who had survived by scrambling their whole lives, the hardest assignment God could give was to do nothing and trust Him.

— God’s whole assignment for them at the dead end was to stand still. Sometimes, this is the hardest thing for us to do.

— Exodus 14:14 ERV says, “You will not have to do anything but stay calm. The Lord will do the fighting for you.” The battle was never theirs to win. It was theirs to witness.

— Rest is the highest form of faith. I call it sweatless victory. Rest is not laziness. It is trust standing still with its hands open, letting God be God.

— 2 Chronicles 20:15 and 17 AMPC say, “the battle is not yours, but God’s… stand still, and see the deliverance of the Lord.” Jehoshaphat’s army won a war without swinging a sword. And Psalm 46:10 TPT says, “Be still and realize that I am God.” Stillness is a weapon when the fight belongs to Him.

— The hardest command God gives a striving person is “stand still.” But when the fight is God’s, your striving and stressing only get in His way. Listen to the Holy Spirit when He tells you to BE STILL and KNOW that He is God.

4. God Gets His Greatest Glory At Your Dead End.

So why the dead end at all? God does not leave us guessing. He tells us His reason twice, before the sea ever moves. Exodus 14:4 says, “This will bring honor to me.” Exodus 14:17-18 says, “Egypt will know that I am the Lord.” The dead end was a stage. God backed His people against the water so that when He moved, no one could credit an army, a lucky break, or a clever escape. Only God. And here is the grace of it. They complained, they doubted, they begged to go back, and God split the sea anyway. Their bad attitude did not cancel His deliverance.

How this applies to you:

— Exodus 14:4 ERV says, “I will defeat Pharaoh and his army. This will bring honor to me.” The dead end existed so the deliverance could only be explained one way.

— God will let it get impossible so that only He can get the glory.

— Exodus 14:17-18 ERV says, “I will show you that I am more powerful… Then Egypt will know that I am the Lord.” God was not only rescuing Israel. He was revealing Himself. Some dead ends are less about your escape and more about God’s renown.

— Here is the grace in it. They murmured, they doubted, they asked to go back to slavery, and God parted the sea for them anyway. Before the Law, their unbelief met His mercy instead of His judgment, and that same grace covers you.

— God does not require a perfect attitude to perform a miracle.

— The bigger the dead end, the bigger the display. God parks His greatest miracles at your worst impossibilities.

— What looks like the end of your road is the beginning of God’s testimony. The same water that feels like your dead end today is the road He is getting ready to open.

Father, I thank You that the dead end in front of me is not the end of my story!

You led me here on purpose, and You know exactly where I am!

My dead end is a set-up for Your glory!

What pressure pulls out of me, You are ready to heal!

I will not be afraid, and I will not run!

I will stand still and watch You save me!

The battle is not mine; the fighting belongs to You!

My striving stops where Your grace begins!

You do not need my perfect attitude to work my miracle!

This is THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
