Discovering Destiny (Part 1) – Destiny Must Be Discovered

Today, we continue our focus on THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, as we learn to maintain our posture of faith after God has revealed His plans for our future.

Today, we begin a brand-new series called “Discovering Destiny.” For nearly a year, we walked verse-by-verse through the book of Galatians, all the way to the final amen. Now we turn the page. I want to show you one of the most freeing truths in all of Scripture: God made plans for you before the foundation of the world, and your job is not to create those plans but to discover them.

Setting the Stage:

The world has one message about your future: build it. Make something of yourself. Grind, hustle, climb, and maybe one day you will arrive. I believed that message for years. Then grace interrupted it with a better one. Long before I drew my first breath, God had already drawn up my life.

That is what discovery means. Discovery is finding what was hidden, uncovering what was always there, and stepping into what was already prepared. Your destiny is not something you invent. It is something you uncover. Let’s talk about it.

So, what does this mean for you today? A few things.

1. You Are Not Building Your Future. You Are Discovering One God Already Wrote.

The world hands you a blank page and tells you to make something of yourself. That was the only gospel many of us ever heard, and I heard it loud in Brooklyn. I was born and raised in a city full of immigrants. This city told me that no one is going to give you anything, and if you want it, you have to go get it. I was raised with that mentality. 

But grace tells a different story. Ephesians 2:10 says that before you were born, God planned your destiny and the good works you would do to fulfill it. The plan is not waiting on your ambition. It is waiting on your discovery. You are not the author of your life. You are the one who gets to walk out what the Author already wrote.

How this applies to you:

— The world hands you an empty canvas; grace hands you a finished portrait.

— Ephesians 2:10 TPT says, “God made us new people so that we would spend our lives doing the good things he had already planned for us to do.” Your destiny is not a blank page waiting for you to create whatever YOU want. Even if your parents told you that you could become whatever YOU want, the truth is that we are supposed to discover what God wants. 

— I grew up in Brooklyn believing my future was something I had to build with my own two hands. Then grace showed me I was never the builder. I was walking into a life God had already drawn up before I arrived.

— Stop straining and stressing to create what God already finished.

— The pressure to invent your purpose is a religious weight you were never meant to carry. When you discover that God planned you before He placed you, the striving/stressing stops, and the believing, receiving, and walking by faith begins.

— This is what THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY is all about. You do not manufacture your destiny by your effort. You uncover the one grace already wrote.

2. God Hid It On Purpose So You Would Search For It.

Proverbs 25:2 is the engine of this entire series. God conceals a matter, and kings search it out. Now hear me carefully: God did not hide your destiny to keep it FROM you. He hid it FOR you, like a treasure with your name buried on it. Jeremiah 29:13 says you will find Him when you seek Him with all your heart. Discovery has a condition, and the condition is a seeker. Plenty of believers want to just tell them without any real pursuit; they want the reveal without the search. But the glory of a king is to search it out until he finds the treasure.

How this applies to you:

— Proverbs 25:2 NKJV says, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.” God did not hide your destiny FROM you. He hid it FOR you.

— A hidden thing is not a withheld thing; it is an invitation to seek.

— Jeremiah 29:13 NIV says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Notice the order. The finding follows the seeking, and the seeking has to be wholehearted, not half-hearted.

— Jesus made the same promise in red letters. Matthew 7:7-8 NKJV says, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” Seeking is not a gamble. Jesus said everyone who seeks finds. The outcome is guaranteed, but the pursuit is required.

— Many believers want the revelation without the time required to seek God. They want Him to drop the whole blueprint in their lap while they stay passive. But the reveal is promised to the seeker, not the spectator.

— Dig until you strike the oil God buried with your name on it.

— There is a grace on your life to search out the matter, to go deeper into His Word and His presence until you hit the answer. You were built to discover. Your life is supposed to be a journey of discovery where God is revealing and releasing, and you are receiving and responding on a daily basis for the rest of your life. This is the life of faith, and it truly makes life exciting. 

3. You Cannot Figure Out Your Destiny. It Has To Be Revealed.

Here is where Kingdom discovery is different from human research. Discovery in the Kingdom is not investigation; it is revelation. First Corinthians 2:9-10 says the things God prepared have never crossed the human mind, and then it tells us how we get them: God unveils them by the Spirit. You will never brainstorm your way into your destiny, because your natural mind is too small to hold what God planned. The Holy Spirit is the Master of Discovery. He searches the deep things of God and hands them to you. Revelation is the authorization for your faith, because you cannot walk in confidence toward a plan you have never seen. So the first move is not striving. It is listening.

How this applies to you:

— 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 TPT says God has things in store “beyond our ability to imagine,” and then “God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit.” You cannot think your way into what God prepared. It has to be unveiled.

— God made plans for you before the world began, and when you were born, you were ignorant of those plans. When you are born again, you receive the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit begins to reveal to you what was prepared for you but concealed from you. Without this revelation, you will never know what God planned for you. 

— Your natural mind is too small to hold what God planned for you. Without the Holy Spirit, I would have never known what God called me to do. 

— New York City is celebrating right now because the New York Knicks have won their first championship in 53 years. The wave of emotion that I felt as a native New Yorker and as a New York Knicks fan when the clock struck zero on game 5 it’s almost too hard to put into words. As I watched my fellow New Yorkers celebrate, I heard someone say that if you never took the train, if you never took a New York City bus, and if you never ate school lunch, you don’t understand what it means to be a New Yorker. That really took me back. I thought about all those school lunches, all that time in the cafeteria, all that time hanging out with my friends, and even the school breakfast program that they would in the summer in low-income areas like mine. I would have never imagined in a 1,000 years that I would be living the life that I live today. This is not a human thing. I’m not living a life that I created on my own. I’m living a life that God planned from the foundations of the world. 

— Discovery in the Kingdom is not human research. It is divine revelation. It is the Holy Spirit pulling back the veil so you can see what grace has already provided.

— The Holy Spirit is the Master of Discovery, and He searches the deep things of God on your behalf.

— Revelation is the authorization for your faith. You cannot walk toward a plan you have never seen, but the moment the Spirit shows it to you, your faith finally has something to stand on.

— I speak this over your life: You will hear before you speak, and you will see before you do.

— This is why prayer and fellowship with the Holy Spirit are not religious rituals for me. They are how I get my orders from headquarters. I do not guess at my destiny. I get it revealed, one download at a time.

4. When You Discover The Plan, You Can Finally Stop Striving and Stressing.

Striving is what you do when you believe it all depends on you. If your future is a blank page, the pressure never lets up, because the whole thing rests on your shoulders. You have to perform, you have to prove, and you can never really rest. But the moment you discover that God wrote the plan before you were born, the weight comes off. You were never the source of your destiny; grace was. You stop working FOR a destiny and start working FROM one that is already secured. This is the great shift grace offers you: from self-effort to the grace realm, from striving to rest. Discovery does not just inform you. It frees you.

How this applies to you:

— Striving and stressing are natural when you believe it all depends on you.

— If your future is a blank page, the pressure never stops. You have to perform, prove, and produce, because it all rests on you. But discovery takes the page out of your hands and puts it back in God’s.

— You were never the source of your destiny; grace was.

— When you discover the plan is already written, you stop working FOR a destiny and start working FROM one that is already secured. The labor itself changes. It becomes worship instead of weight.

— The highest form of faith is not striving harder. It is resting in what grace already finished.

— For years, I worked hard in my own ability, and when I finished something, I finished on fumes. Why? Because I was grinding toward a future I thought I had to construct. Then grace showed me the plan was already finished before I was even born. Once I realized this, I stopped striving and stressing. Now I do not chase my destiny. I walk in it, by faith, without fear, without a doubt, without wavering, because I know that God started this thing in my life and HE will finish it through me! This is the Grace Life, and I believe it’s how I’m supposed to live.

Father, I thank You that You planned me before You placed me!

I am not building my future. I am discovering the one You already wrote!

You hid my destiny for me, not from me, and I will search it out!

I am a king, and the glory of a king is to search out a matter!

I cannot figure out my destiny. I receive it by revelation!

The Holy Spirit is my Master of Discovery, and He shows me the deep things of God!

My history is not my destiny. I am who grace says I am!

My worst moment cannot cancel what You settled before time began!

This is THE YEAR OF DISCOVERY, and I am discovering all You prepared for me!

I will FIND it, FOLLOW it, and FINISH it, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!
